Best aluminum wheels and fenders for a Schwinn Continental?
Ok, so I realize a Continental isn't a "special" bike, but mine is pretty flawless and I don't want to bugger it up irreversibly. I ride the bike a lot, and the chrome rims leave a lot to be desired in braking performance when it rains/snows.
Basically I'm having this debate: Do I build a set of wheels using the stock hubs and new aluminum hoops(of course, I'd keep the original rims so I could return it to stock if I chose), or do I buy a pre-built set of 27" wheels with a 5 speed freewheel? I want to keep the stock tire dimensions because I like the way the bike rides a lot, it's very smooth and comfy.
I feel like the stock hubs are really nice. They're not light, but they roll smooth and Schwinns have a reputation for durability. Would an all new set of wheels necessarily be nicer?
My other question is about fenders, does anyone know how wide of a fender I can go with using the stock brakes? I like the velo-orange fenders a lot, but if there is a better metal fender out there I'd definitely consider it.
The Continental filled with cardboard boat supplies!

If it we mine and the original wheels were in nice condition, I'd leave them be in case you want to return the bike to its original state.
So, the choice would be between building up another set or buying a set already made. Wheels spaced for 5 speed are a dime a dozen - they're everywhere bike parts are piled up.
If you like, I can go up in the rafters to see if I have any old Schwinn wheels left laying around. I'd be glad to snip the hubs out and send them to you for the price of postage if I do have any.

The Velo Orange fenders are nice looking. Take a measurement around the bottom bracket and brake area and that should be the narrowest point on the frame. If Velo doesn't list the dimension they will probably respond to an e-mail. You should also consider the stock Chrome Schwinn fenders. They tend to be around and look very classy and period correct. They are also solid and durable. Note that they vary by frame size (attachment location on the rear fender).
