Help: Mavic 646 Clipless Pedals
 

I got this in a deal and wondering what I need to us them, never used clipless but want to try it. I just have the pedals and tried doing research but all i get is reviews nothing that can really answer what i need.

They look (no pun intended) like they would use Look Delta style cleats...but don't hold me to that. You would then need shoes that accept the cleats. You would then attach your foot to the pedal, and wonder how you ever road your bike without them.

What size shoe do you wear? I have moved over to all SPD and don't wear my road shoes at all any more. I have I think three pairs of Look Delta compatible pedals, I pair of cleats, and one pair of size 43 (10ish) Sidi road shoes... I've been meaning to list the lot as a package deal but haven't gotten around to it.

Im a size 9, they dont have anything stylish for clipless huh? looking for shoes like Chrome but seems the only us the SPD system

I don't care about stylish cycling shoes, but SPD is where it's at for functionality and ability to walk in the shoes. Walking with Delta cleats (even with covers) is miserable. I could go hiking in my Sidi Dragon 2 shoes with SPD cleats. In fact I have gotten lost a few times exploring state forests on my cross bike and had to shoulder the bike and walk a few miles through the woods in the rain. Could NEVER have done that in road shoes with Deltas.

Those are Mavic's 2nd gen pedals that they sold with their SSC group around the mid 80's It features both float and release tension adjustment (done with dialed screws at the bottom of the pedals) that most clipless pedals back then still did not have, so it was kinda ahead of it's time. These pedals were most likely still based on Look's clipless pedal design as their first gen clipless pedals were, so Look Delta type cleats should work with these pedals. Any shoe with the Look three bolt cleat mounting system should also work with these pedals.
These used to go for relatively cheap even as NOS (sometimes just around 70 to 80 bucks), as they are kinda clunky looking and on the heavy side, compared to most other clipless pedals, but have since, in the last couple of years, rose up in value in the auction sites with NOS examples now easily breaking the $120 price point.
Some people called this pedal the "Lego" pedal because of the bright yellow plastic parts in distinctive geometric shapes it had that catches the eye.
Very nice classic clipless pedals, specially if you are putting together a mid 80'd Mavic SSC group for a bike.
