Strap pedal setup
In the photos of L'Eroica success!, http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...roica-success!, I noticed a number of bikes/riders with the "old fashioned" strap-type pedal. I'm thinking of using this type of setup on my new "old" bike but I'm wondering what type of shoes these riders would be wearing. I'm thinking that the standard clipless type shoe without a cleat might be too slippery on the bottom and none of the shoes looked like they were MTB shoes.

These are what were designed to be used with quill pedals and rat traps...

Mine from the early 70's. Plastic versions of the cleat that screw onto current shoes are available. Modern pedals are somewhat easier to release from. |
This is what I like to use with toe clips and straps. Can be a bit difficult to find if you have larger feet though.

I use adidas indoor soccer shoes for my older strap pedal commuter bike, they have a low toe profile and sorta look vintagey. On my modern fixed gear bike I use spd pedals and mtn. bike shoes.

I'm lovin' me some vintage Lottos (pics later maybe) with slotted cleats for my clip/strap pedals. Normal shoes can be used but I prefer more of a platform pedal for these as the soles tend to be too soft for quills. You can get slotted cleats with a 3 bolt pattern for use on modern cycling shoes but I'd look for something with laces as Velcro straps tend to hang up on entry and exit.
