Anyone ever use frame blocks

I purchased a set of frame blocks to remove a wrinkle in my downtube so I clamped it as tight as I could it made no effect so I braced the frame put one half of the block over the wrinkle and gave it a wack with a hammer and the wrinkle was gone!

I have never heard of the whack it method. I have used the 'slow massage with lube' method. That's always straightened it out for me. It's been decades, but that's how I remember it. YMMV

Are we still talking about bikes?

Also as far as I can see there was no corresponding blip any where else on the frame. The top tube looks good

Just be careful, it may cause the frame to grow a size or 2. :roflmao2:

It's only recommended for those who want stiffer frames.

Reynolds 10-18-12 12:02 PM

I used a frame block clamped in a vise and a lever to straighten a steerer tube.

Iowegian 10-18-12 12:08 PM

I used some aluminum frame blocks and had mixed results with a crashed RB-1. There was a ding in the middle of the tube and the blocks did a very nice job of getting that fixed. It's not perfect but a tiny bit of filler or a thick powder coat would make it disappear.

There was also some front end damage to both tubes. The top tube cleaned up nicely but I couldn't really do much to the down tube since it appears the bulge is right at the butt (watch your thoughts....) and I couldn't rotate the frame as much as I wanted to due to the tight fit.

puchfinnland 10-18-12 12:23 PM

these frame blocks should go on tour,
I am sure there are many forumites who would like to use them.
something like the box o crap, but could be the box -o- blocks

These are frame blocks another use for them is to turn a vice into a work stand as you can clamp the frame with it

I just had to mention those are some GORGEOUS lugs!,,,,BD

callig 10-18-12 10:25 PM

The frame is a Condor Superb around 1975 Reynolds 531 Campi drop outs

I'm not sure about going on tour but if someone wants to schedule a sleep-over I'd be alright with that.

At the shop I worked at as a teen we used the Parks Frame stand/straightener for that. Didn't have frame blocks.

RubberLegs 10-19-12 11:17 AM

Big hammer and a piece of wood for an old ROSS frame that was a bit out of true. It must have taken quite a lick to put a ding and a good bend in the DT. Some heavy gauge Steel.

zandoval 10-19-12 08:31 PM

Had not heard of them till you mentioned - I assume they are similar to these - Nice to know they work...

The top tube looks slightly tweaked to me too. I laid a flat edge on my screen and it does not follow a flat line. Of course it is a photo on a monitor so there could be some sort of visual error.

callig 10-19-12 11:06 PM

Yes I got it from Bicycletool.com

callig 10-19-12 11:10 PM

I think it has something to do with the lug I laid a framers square over the top tube and it is perfectly true
