Winter riding.

It's winter here in South Florida. The temps may drop into the 60's soon enough. Time for me to get my insulated riding gear out.

Your a real comedian, aren't you?

Well, for your information, it will be in the 60's here in NYC this whole week and a couple of days into the 70's. So right back at you! (But in truth, I'm a weenie, another couple of weeks and I'm done for the season...)

Funny, funny. Although, I do remember being in Orlando in February one year for vacation and it was in the high 50's/low 60's. My wife and I rented a convertible Mustang and enjoyed driving down the freeway with the top down on the car while the locals drove by with their coats and gloves on, windows rolled up and I'm sure the heat on.

I enjoy the winter riding - somedays - but usually only when it's 35 and higher. Sometimes you can see some really cool things:

Oh, yeah, winter! We had one of those a couple years ago. Good riding, your water stays cold, no need to worry about sweat... in particular, I remember this ride fondly.

Good times!

Here in Seattle we had a wonderful dry summer with temps in the 70s mostly, w/ low humidity. Hardly broke a sweat for months.
Winter has arrived (high temp today = 45ish), time to get out my rain gear.

Hopefully I'll be in Florida in January, remind me to egg your house when I'm there

I've had several commutes this fall in the 40 degree range and the wife and I did 28 miles this last Saturday and it was in the low 50s but really felt cooler.

One of these days I might get smart and move South.

I enjoy winter riding.
- Actually, I prefer it.
Snow, ice, and sub-zero temps all present their little challenges.

Anyone have any good recommendations for cold weather gloves? I'm talking real cold weather. Below freezing cold weather. Chicago cold weather

Anyone find anything that let's them get out for rides in 20 F. weather?

Snowmobile mittens. With catalytic warmers. Seriously.

But you lose a lot of dexterity with mittens, so my winter bike is a 3-speed fixed gear with guidonnet brake levers.

Address on its way.

I've got my own heater. It's a bit expensive to run though:

You need handlebar muffs (insulated shells attached to the bars), and a pair of gloves inside that. It works pretty well, but requires a little fiddling to get your hands back on the bars. I've used the setup on motorcycles and bicycles, works well for keeping hands warm enough.

I use leather motorcycle gloves, with silk liners in the winter. I believe they came from Aerostitch.

^Steering can be a bit of a challenge. I like to call the above sport Snow-Cross.

I've been riding with a pair of gloves that accept the 8 hour hand warmers in a pocket over the top of the hand. They work great down to about 20F, the limit of my winter riding temperatures.

I've never been in snow. I did see a lot of ice on our Alaska trip, but that was during the summer months. No snow, lots of ice. I for one can not take cold weather. It gets into the 50's and I start wearing winter coats.

Yeah, no snow or ice riding for this guy. My shoulder is still recovering from my crash last January, I can do most things just fine now but still can't lay or sleep on my right side ten months after the crash.

No good.

Mike, come for a visit this January-March (the later you come the warmer it will be). I'll deck you out in some of my finest winter gear and we'll go for a long ride. What VeloKnome said above, at first it is but it soon becomes

The reason is your body engine purrs along all heated up and the cold takes the heat away instantly. The only trick is figuring out how to keep the hands and toes comfortable. Once that battle is won, all is right in the world.

Another bike in winter moment?
