Vintage (looking) Rim Suggestions

I'm already at the last and most important (to me anyway) step in my '86 Raleigh Competition restoration... the wheelset. I'm working on finding a set of Shimano 600 hubs (the 7-speed freehub type) 32 hole, or 32 rear and 28 front. I want them to have the "original" look, so I'll probably go with 2 cross front and 3 cross rear.

NOS rims are getting rare and pricey... can anyone suggest a good quality vintage looking rim? Aluminum finish, not dark anodized or painted.

Thanks!!!

Are you looking for tubular or clincher? Check out Velo Orange if you are looking for a clincher that looks vintage.

H+Son TB14
VO Raid

Those would be my top choices. Others would include:

Sun CR18
Sun M13-II
VO PBP

I'm thinking clincher. Thanks for the tip!

I really like the H+Son TB14 that the Colonel suggested above. I will build a wheelset with them sooner or later. They come in polished, grey anodized or black.

Those Velo Orange PBP look pretty nice... and they are nice and skinny.

I like the double eyelet on the Raid, but they are a bit wider than I'd like. The last set of wheels that I built up (back in the 80's) had a set of Mavic MA40 rims, and I even thought those looked too wide. The Raid is almost 2mm wider.

All of the rims I listed are polished, so they're all nice and shiny. The M13-II and the PBP are nearly identical looking.

I have wheelsets with both the Raids and MA40s. The Raid doesn't look any wider to my eye.

You might do some reading on the increasing popularity of wider rims. I'm drinking that kool-aide and see no good reason to build up a new wheelset with narrow rims.

Actually... now that I'm really thinking about it... I am 50 lbs HEAVIER now than when I had my MA40s... maybe a wider rim isn't a bad idea.

MA40's, can surely take on another 50 pounds in most cases as they are pretty strong and rugged rims. They are still a very good choice if you are putting together an 80's bike....
The dark anodizing on the will still be appropriate for most bikes from the 80's.......but will no look correct for 70's and older bikes.

Are MA40s still in production? I haven't found any. They were bomb-proof back when I had them on my bike. Unfortunately, the guy who owned the bike when I let her go for a few years kept those wheels when he traded it in.

Sorry, I thought you knew that they haven't made them since maybe the early 90's. I forgot to add "....if you can find them..." They still do come up like many other clincher rims from the 80's at ebay as NOS sets, but limited numbers left means will be quite pricey compared to something like the new rims from VO.....
I was just thinking that you might reconsider rims that you are already familiar with.

I know, It's just I would like to tell him to reconsider trying to get MA40s again if he can push it, specially if he's not looking at them because of concerns about his heavier weight since he last had them... I personally will prefer to wait and save up some money to get the best/appropriate rims I can put on a build than resort to "modern" substitutes.....In the end, it's just a more satisfying result when restoring a nice C&V bike.

I completely understand what you mean, Chombi... I guess I should have explained more in my original post. I intend to (eventually) have 2 sets of wheels for this bike. My first priority is a set of vintage-looking wheels on which I intend to put a lot of miles. They don't have to be absolutely correct... just very functional. That's why I'm going with the 7-speed freehub. I need those soon.

I'm also planning on keeping my eyes out for a set of Shimano 600 freewheel hubs and a set of real vintage rims... those will go on the bike when she's "retired" as an original restoration.

I have a 126mm 105SC, 32h rear hub for 7 speed UG or HG cassettes if that suits you.

I have a set of the VO PBP rims. They are taller (thicker) than the MA40s but a bit narrower.

left to right, and back to front: open Pro, G40, MA40, PBP

The tallness of the VO PBP rim is what does not look so good to me. I usually equate tall looking rims aesthetically to "aero" section rims and not box section rims, so in the case of the VO rims, they tend to look uber boxy/clunky/heavy.....JMOs....

MA40s came on my Cinelli when I bought it. After years of constantly retruing the rear the ferrules began to pull out of the rim. I've since heard the opinion that they were build a little light.

I really like the Velo-Orange rims, they have that nice Super Champion look and build up nice. I also like the Sun rims for the price, but I don't find them especially vintage looking. No rim back in the day had that ridge down the center.

IRD Cadence!

I am building up a wheelset with them now and they are quite a beutiful rim. Very similar looking to the Mavic Open Pro. They are also extremely light at ~385g.

EDIT: You can't really tell this by the photo, but they are double walled and eyeleted. More info here: https://www.interlocracing.com/rims.html
