De Rosa Project
This will be a slow build. I wanted to make an album of the process.

To do list:
1. Find handlebars with a good bend. None of my Cinelli's or 3t bars have impressed me so far. 2. Find clear tubing for the shifter cables 3. Wheels. Have some Rolf Vector Comps in red. Doesn't really "fit" with the bike though. 4. Decals. Might want to do something unique with these. |
Looking good so far!
|
PRETTY! You cheated though, you started with a WHOLE lot better Italian Bike than MY Italian Project....what was the equivalent of WalMart in Italy in the 60/70s? :-)
|
Pretty damn tempting detail shots. I'll be watching this thread.

Clear cable housing?

I have very thin clear/grey plastic tubing over my brake cable on the TT on my FELT to protect paint/cable rub, have not seen it anywhere for sale. probably about 1.5mm diameter, is that what you are talking about, or just clear cable housing?

1. Handlebars? If you like short and shallow, you can't beat the SOMA Hwy One

I agree great pics and great details with the paint.
If your staying with the NR/SR setup the wheels have to be basic, especially with that red. I think you should opt for a basice silver rim like a polished up Mavic Module E or a Rigida. They are basic no frills but are serviceable and wont detract from the bike. |
Here's what I would do.
GL 330s with Record hubs. GP4s are fine as well. Veloflex Criteriums for tires if you go the tub route. San Marco Regal and check into Jagwire "Racer" braided cable. Whatever bars you want are great, but I'd rethink/use the Cinelli 64s with an XE/1a. Make sure the bar tape and saddle match. I'd go white. Super Record gruppo and for gosh sakes, find the correct decal set. I'd do it properly. |

Jagwire makes the cable liner in black or clear, comes on a roll, any LBS should have it. Alternatively, take the cheapest leftover piece of line shift cable you have and cut the casing, strip the wires and voila...clear teflon liner tube.
Deda 215 would be my choice for 26.0 bars. Campy 10 (Centaur) or 11 (Athena) would be my choice for silver components. |

I agree but ditch the cork in the fork. It will absorb and retain water, not good. If you really want to plug it use a cheap wine plastic "cork" I just run some grease on a bottle brush to coat the section below the stem and above the brake. If you go out in the rain or wash the bike most headset top nuts are Not water tight, some grease there and a way for the water to escape is in my view best. Bikes like this don't see weather on purpose.
Excellent advice! |

My first fixed gear will be a De Rosa then! Last pic is an Origin8/Formula fixed gear wheel. :p
Our buying group found it on CL in Des Moines of all places. I never did get to ride it, as I had my third surgery on my left knee at the same time the bicycle was acquired. That ended that. Very sad to see it go. Oh, I really didn't think you were serious about the Origin 8. :) |

Dropout screws came in. These were a bit harder to find than I thought but stainless steel is worth it. Final picture before I go on a short hiatus on the project. |
Your before is better than my after.
|
There's just something beautiful about the socketed de rosa dropouts.
|
Wow, beautiful teaser pics. Can't wait to see the full result.
