Help ID a single speed Raleigh
1 Attachment(s)
I am looking at a picture of a single speed Raleigh. You experts please tell me what king of model is it? I am thinking of buying it.
Thanks,http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=282752 |
My guess would be it is a Sport. If you could see the other side of the bike the model should be on the chain guard. Roger

From the little I can see, it looks a single-speed version of an LTD-3. I've never heard of one, but I'd guess it's a Raleigh LTD. It's a cheap version of the Sports.

I wouldn't rule out the possibility that this is an LTD-3 that has been downgraded to a single speed, but that would be an odd thing for anyone to do. Do I count 32 spokes front, 40 rear? If so, the wheels are presumably original and it's from the early 70's. |
Or is that an AW 3 speed hub and some hosebag has lost the shifter cable? A single speed would have a rear hub that looks almost like the front but with a freewheel on it, or a coaster brake with a reaction arm on the left side, I'm not seeing that reaction arm.
Nice color. I haven't seen that on a Sport. Maybe it's not an American market bike. |
See those two silver stripes just below the seat cluster and above the tubing sticker? I'd bet a dollar that that's the band that holds the shift cable wheel, like the one in this picture;

The missing pieces will cost less than $20. If it's your size and you like the color it's a great bike. |
Thank you all for the info. I am going to take a look tomorrow. It does look like it has lost the shifter and cable.

It's may be the Raleigh LTD-SC (singlespeed/coaster brake). Probably 1970-1971.

I'm noticing the chain guard looks like it encloses both sides of the top. Doe's that indicate anything?
rhm: What are you looking for to indicate one particular rim or another? Endrick/Westrick ? |

Can't see the Coaster Brake. My money is on a non-US market LTD missing its shifter and cables. Looks like an AW hub. I think Sailorbenjamin is right

Just picked up the bike. It is an LTD-3. Rough condition.
He also has a Robinhood so I picked it up as well. |

What I'm looking for is a shadow of a rounded ridge down the center of the rim. This rim looks like slightly rounded box, while the fancier rim has more curves. It's also wider and heavier. What I see looks like the cheaper Endrick rim, which is what I'd prefer anyway since it's lighter. I'm not actually sure the Sports always had the more expensive rim, though. I am pretty sure the cheaper models, the Hercules and Robin Hood and Triumph and LTD-3 and soo many others, all had the Endrick rim.

Thanks for the info guys! :)

The Malaysian and some Canadian-made Sports from the early 70's had the plain rims and Brooks Mattress saddles. Odd color too. I would agree with the others that mention that it is a non-US spec bike and someone removed the three speed shifter and cable. Still, it looks like a nice find...

Thank you all for your info and expertise. I am sure I will be asking more questions because this is my first English 3-speed bikes.
I have experience in the American 3-speeds powered by the Shimano hubs. As a matter of fact, I finally fixed my Shimano 3SC (3-speeds with coaster brake). There is very little info of it on the net but it turned out that the INTERNAL locknuts positions/adjustments are very important. I have 5 bikes with the Shimano 3-speed hubs and a few spare parts hubs. Anyway, I have a better look at the English bikes now. 1) The Robinhood hub is dated "65 11". This is the one I will be working on first. The dynamo still works because I can see the little red light lights up when I spin the wheel. I cannot see the front lights yet but it did cleaned up pretty well. The only missing part is the left-rear side axle nut and washer. 2) The Raleigh LTD-3 is dated "72 11" on the hub. I will work on this after finishing the Robinhood so I will have more experience. This one is missing the shifter, cable, right-rear axle nut, and indicator spindle/chain. I am starting to see that these indicator spindle/chains have different length so I will be finding a correct one later. There are some missing parts like axle nuts, shifter/cable, etc. I have a donor bike, a 1988 Sheffield with the SA 3-speed hub (hub date: 88 5). It also has the cottered cranks, etc. This one is missing the little long nut that screwed onto the indicator chain. I hope some other parts will transfer. My first noob question on the shifter as I cannot find the details after searches. How is the cable installed/routed inside the shifter? Is there a guide on how to take apart the shifter and install a new cable? Thanks, |

I just finished rebuilding this bike. It rides and shifts really smooth. Here are things I did:
1) stripped the whole thing all he way down to screws and bolts. De-rust, grease and lubed everything. Previous people opened the hub before but they reversed the order of the clutch sleeve/clutch. After I got some shifting parts (shifter/cable, etc), it was not shifting but the indicator chain moves freely. I opened it up and found the problem so it was an easy fix. 2) Removed the surface rust and put two coats of clear coat. 3) Installed new brakes cable housing. 4) Put on a new kickstand and found some blue silicon grips. 5) DIYed a TravelPro Platinum tote bag so it can be hooked onto the saddle with quick release. It is a pretty big saddle bag and my frame pump can be put inside. It is very convenient so I can move it from bike to bike. http://www.bikeforums.net/attachment...9&d=1356368521 http://www.bikeforums.net/attachment...0&d=1356368533 http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=289969http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=289970 |
