Tyler bicycles
 

So far I've come across 2 "Tyler" bicycles. They were both lugged bikes, one a 3 speed, the other a SS with coaster brake. The first was my dads and I rode it around a lot. I was wondering if anyone knew anything about these bikes. The second one I found says "Made in Poland" on it.

My first bike was a Tyler children's size cruiser looking bike. Single-speed with a coaster brake. It was dark green, probably purchased around 1981. My cousin had a matching one in brown.

Hi Folks ! Tyler bikes were imported from Poland in the early 1960's and disappeared in the early 1970's. They were OK quality, kind of basic and roughly manufactured. The one thing that I remember most about them is that one model kids bike had 20 X 1.75 tires and tubes on their wheels and you could not get a replacement tire of the exact same size to stay on the rim. Sort of like the rim was just a hair smaller than normal. Tires would routinely blow right off the rim even though they were the exact same size. These bikes were sold in some bike shops and mostly in mass merchandisers. I believe that they were imported into a Boston warehouse.

I have a woman's Tyler bicycle with 26x1-3/8 EA3 wheels on it. The rear hub is a Shimano 333 3-speed, and judging by the serial number it's from 1974. The rear dropouts are stamped, so it's not as rugged as an English 3-speed. It also is labeled, "Made in Poland".

I worked at a shop in Vermont that sold Tyler bikes in the early '80s, they were still importing them then. We got mostly kids bikes and adult 3 speeds, but I remember some road bikes as well. They used an oddly large cotter pin size as I recall, all had lugged frames.

I'm digging up this old thread rather than starting a new one.

I've only been messing with old bikes a few months, and I'm allready in way over my head with incomplete projects...so, what did I do, of course, I got another one.

My Tyler, as cheap 70's era road bikes go....they don't get much cheaper than this.

Had all Shimano group on it, Eagle RD and a Thunderbird FD, dunno if those were factory or not.
No cable guides anywhere, but it is decaled "Ten Speed" on the downtube.

It tore down amazingly easy, and none of the rust looks fatal, it's everywhere, but it's not too deep. Plus, them tubes are nice and thick to begin with. :rolleyes:

Moments like this make me question moving forward on the Tyler,

Crimped on drop outs, plus all the rust means it's really not worth the time.

But the time today I spent in the shop with my Dad means I'm going to push on and see it through. He's got no connection with this bike other than it being sold at a bike shop in his hometown. Dad spent today cleaning tractor parts and working out where "Bicycle Alley" was located there. While I sandblasted the frame and fork, carefully protecting the head tube decal, the dealer decal I removed, and the seat tube decal was too far gone. Then we went over the brazing job the factory in Poland did 30+ years ago and discussed how best to clean it up, files and some dremel work took care of the worst of it. It's in primer now.

Dad's never owned a 10 speed in his life, tho he's allways had a bicycle. I think I'm going to give him a nice one for his 60th in April, It's not going to be this one though! I think he needs something a little better!

That's great I have never seen a 10speed Tyler Road bike before (I'd love to find one). I do however have a kids Schwinn Sting-Ray version that was my first bike as a kid (1977), an adult mens 3spd cruiser, and I recently aquired the very rare Tyler folding bicycle which I didn't know exisited until just recently. Do you have any pictures of the bike completely restored... I'd like to see them.

I realize that this is an old thread but I see that tou are still active here in the forums so I hope you will see my question... You said that you worked at a shop back in the 80s that sold Tyler Bikes... Do you ever remember selling a Tyler folding bike (20" wheel). I bought one recently and it appears to be all original, however there are some decals that have either faded away or are missing all together and I would like to restore it, but without a picture or some knowledge of the original logos it will be difficult to say the least. Thanks.
