Dura Ace 7400 wheels... will they fit a 10 speed cassette? (They DO fit a 9-speed...

Hi... I have some wheels I'm selling... they have Dura Ace 7400 (I think) hubs and came with a Dura Ace 7700 9 speed cassette installed and working on them...

They buyer wants to know if they will take a 10 speed cassette... Will they? I looked online and all the sources I found said that they would only fit an 8... but there was a 9 on there... so I'm not sure...

Here is my add with pictures included so you can see and let me know...

As I understand it, the 7400 stuff came in two flavours - the eight speed used a different cassette body and fit only the DA matching cassettes. But the standard was so short lived they were quickly updated to the normal hyper glide standard. So my thought is, if it fits the 9 speed it must then have been updated and will fit the 10 speed.

I am not an expert. I could be wrong.

7400 cassette hubs will certainly not take anything but a 6 or 7 speed Uniglide cassette. I have 2 wheelsets with these hubs. Check the numbers on the rear hub. I bet it says 7403, which was the first 8-speed Hyperglide compatible hub. Or perhaps someone retrofitted a 7403 freehub onto a 7400 hub shell.

There is a good chance that the 10-speed cassette will work, since you already have a 9 installed. I've never tried this. But the 7403 freehub will NOT take an 11-tooth cog.

Hopefully your freehub is in good shape & recently lubed-up. Because these haven't been made in 20 years and are impossible to find now.

Yes, those wheels will take 8, 9 or 10s cassettes.

If it takes a 9, it will take an 8 or a 10, regardless of the model.

Unless someone upgraded it to an HG hub, your lockring will be too big to use an 11t cog.
