Need chain rings for 1990 Specialized RockHopper

I picked up this 1990 (approx-anyone know for sure?) Specialized Rockhopper for $50, was covered in grunge, took it to Burning Man, cleaned it off when I got home and discovered a lovely old sweetheart of a bike, mismatched tires and all. I know it's a bit of a mutt at this point, but I still love the bike and I need to start by replacing the chain ring. It's got its original Shimano SG-X 110mm 26-36-46 now. Help anyone?

Hello and welcome to the Bike Forums.

There is a forum for buying and selling items and you should use that forum to conduct this sort of business. There is a small fee to use the buy/sell opportunity but it is more than worth the very few dollars asked. You might want to consider going in that direction when seeking this or that for an old bicycle.

Again, welcome to the Bike Forums and good luck with your search.

Head to the nearest co-op and pick one up. In the bay area, you should have several to choose from.

I suspect the chainrings are standard 110 BCD and you should be able to get one at most any bike shop or even the COOP.

I would look for a sturdier rack at the COOP too.

Yes, 110mm BCD rings are easy to find. This is a good chance to re-evaluate tooth count, as well -- depending on your tastes in freewheel range, a 44T or a 48T ring might work out better for you. (I run 48-40-28 on the Schwinn and 46-38-24 on the Ross, both with 2-3 tooth progressions in back.)

Re-evaluate tooth count

Good idea...I gotta say, though, I am much more concerned with being able to climb the steep hills around Berkeley and beyond than getting more speed on the flat, so I'm only thinking about a T24 on the low end. I understand T24 is as low as you can go on the 110's (oops, the inner ring is 74mm).

The middle ring (sprocket?) is actually 'torn' in two places, just like you'd tear a piece of paper! Plus several of the teeth are almost shorn off. It's hard to believe that the bike still runs when using this ring.

So the search for a co-op/used parts shop in the Bay Area has turned up some awesome projects. I LOVE that each little project for fixing up this bike has led to a whole universe of connections. There is such a strong communal flavor to the bike community in the Bay Area, people slowing down and taking care of each other...check out the Bike Kitchen:

The Bike Kitchen (https://www.bikekitchen.org) in SF less than a mile from the Mission BART station, is a very cool co-op that I'll go visit and see if they have what I need.

Here's something awesome they just did:
The Bike Kitchen has also come to the aid of the Mission District’s beloved CELLspace! Recently, CELLspace was unexpectedly saddled with an additional $25,000 in necessary renovations to their new fire exit, forcing the facility to potentially shut down. We are elated to be able to come to the aid of the very organization to which we owe our own existence, in the form of a $13,000 interest-free loan. When the Bike Kitchen started, CELLspace gave us a rent-free space for about two years at the Mission Village Market (remember that place? It was the weekend flea market and warehouse/art space at 18th & Alabama). Because of their generosity, the The Bike Kitchen was able to flourish, and is now in a position to give back to other non-profit projects and community organizations in SF.

And a sturdier rack is definitely in the bike's future, too!

It came that way. If you saw a new one, you would be surprised how mangled the chain rings look. Its there to enhance shifting.

Wow, I thought you were kidding! And then I checked the chainring and for sure you are right. The 'tears' are smooth and uniform....here's a pic...certainly needs a good cleaning, and it's a bit rusty, but for 24 years, not so bad I guess.

Yes, that's exactly how the came all those years ago. Your chainrings are not particularly worn (they are steel, after all) - clean them and they'll work OK.

FWIW: Shimano called this feature "Hyperdrive", and introduced it in 1993.

the reason I was asking is because you may need to replace the chain and possibly the cassette as well. if the chainrings are tore up it could be due to chain stretch

the other reason i was asking is because it's pretty rare to see a worn out chain ring.. looks like you don't need to replace yours after all
