Gosh, that's gorgeous. Where did you find a chain guard like that? I've been scouring the internet for one and have had zero luck.

Ebay.

ebay is awesome!

In reference to the OP's question of ethics, I'm going to quote the great Henry Archer Payne.

On the other end of the spectrum, we can all agree that KonAaron's space-age "Huffy" is permissible, right? ;)

rusty shrapnel-Hats off-WOW!!!
this is what I did with a 6 month old frameset for my wife....

Im in a simmilar situation,

just bought a AD ULTIMA with 531 pro tubing,(smokechrome) and considering painting it Puch Profigrün and label it as a Puch Mistral Ultima.
Puch just decided to offer the smoke chrome AD in the states-Yanks like chrome I guess

Serial numbers sync perfect
PUCH Panto is on both frames
both have the same value.-the AD may have slightly more in Austria as it was never sold in Europe.

its not a fake, just different badges.

carwise

I own an Fiat Scudo-really cool diesel sipping minivan
it is also badged ad a Peugeot Expert and Renault Jumpy.
only the horn badge, and outside labels are different, not one part on the car says any of the 3 companies-as they are all the same, were launched the same time, and all get the same facelifts at the year changes-strange?!

jr59 11-20-12 03:20 PM

Well sort of!

Is this the same group of guys that went a bit overboard about the replica Confente bike for sale?
isn't this the same thing?

randyjawa 11-20-12 04:44 PM

Some pretty interesting takes on the question, however; let's step it up a notch...

Let's say I have an early seventies Bottecchia "Giro d'Italia" frame and fork, with no art remaining on the frame set. Would it be unethical for me to build it up as a Bottecchia Professional? Please keep in mind that the Giro d'Italia frame and the Professional frame are virtually identical and I have no way of telling which one the frame set originally was/is. The only difference between the two models is found in the components fitted.

http://www.velo-pages.com/main.php?g...serialNumber=2

Now, I did not know that the frame sets were identical. The fellow I got the frame from informed me of their identical specifications.

Have a look at the feature article on my Bottecchia. Even there, I can't decide which way to go and it is not an ethical thing this time. I happen to like the looks of the Giro better than the Pro...

I did not take a picture of the Glider/Raleigh Clubman but I do have pictures of this old Glider, which is another re-branded Raleigh...

...the Glider Clubman clone is at the Bicycles for Humanity shop right now, is much older, as nearly as I can tell. Perhaps I can find time to get some pictures later.

Would converting a Lemans into a GTO make it a GTO? Or a Camaro into a Z-28? Even though they would be almost identical to the original, they will never be worth as much.

I would keep it as a Glider, there are plent of Raleigh's around and a Glider would be unique.

What do you mean by "almost"? If there is a difference, then there is a difference. The question is only relevant if there is no difference.

I agree, though, a Glider Clubman would be much more interesting than a Raleigh Clubman.

That was my first 10 speed in 1970. Huret gears, light blue (mink) paint. Promptly stolen in about 2 months.

Let me give you the ethical answer; Build the bike as it was. Not as something else that it was close to.

Think about you buying something from somebody and thinking you got just what you wanted.
Only to find out it was just close, or made by, or anything except what you bought!

You would not like it so much then. So when you contact the seller, he says it's just like and made by....

You would hit the roof!

Is that clear enough?

Haha, I wish you lived a little closer to Cleveland then! :) I just crawled Ebay and couldn't find anything that looked like it would work on my Peugeot project.

Yup - the bicycle was manufactured by Raleigh. Thanks. Everything is pretty clear now:-)

PaintItCeleste 11-20-12 06:54 PM

I think a good line to consider is: taking a low-end bike, and rebadging it as another similar low-end bike vs. taking a low-end bike and rebadging it as a high-end bike. JPZ66 brings up a good point, that even with disclosure, as the bike is passed along, the story can be lost and potentially someone could get perhaps even unintentionally 'duped' down the line. That would be a bummer.

And as jr59 alluded to, close will never be the original.

jimmuller 11-20-12 07:31 PM

i found this old Puegoet bicycle in a friends barn their gonna give me it i think it must be a PX10 from the pics i found online anyone interested in buying it its worth a lot of money but you can have it for a lot less i dont have enough posts to send messages

I'd say it depends on the bike in question, and if you sell it then it depends on the person you sell it to. You aren't going to be duping anyone that a Vega is a GTO. Anyone who wants it for its brand name (for example, a C&V member :)) should be told its history.

PeregrineA1 11-20-12 09:50 PM

I don't know these bikes at all so forgive my ignorance on relative value. That being said, if it is not a bike of some significance, why paint it as you like and call it what like....heck make up a name. If I come upon an unidentifiable or other common (not necessarily low end) frame that seems worthy of a project, it will powdercoated and ridden. Might be blue, might be green. Won't be something I can't say for sure what it ever was.

Pretty much says all I would like to say. There's a point in this hobby where you just fix them up, ride them, and have fun. Little else matters.

Resale is clear. Honesty should prevail.

So was a pinto and a Lincoln. What difference does that make?

The bottom line is you are asking if it's ok to misrepresent something.
The answer is no it's not.

Of course you can do whatever you wish. Ethical or not.

In my dealings with people over the years, I have found that most people will always do the right thing,
until enough money gets involved. Then not so much.
People have different amounts of course, but money changes everyone ethics.

Do what you want, that's what you are going to do anyway.
I'm a little shocked that you would even ask this. But as I said money changes most people!

Don't worry.... I've put the ignore feature to work in your case.

You have made it clear that that is how you understood the question. And I think we all agree on the answer to that question.

But I thought OP was asking a different question.

I vote "No, leave it as an AD Ultima" - if you're taking votes.

JPZ66 11-21-12 11:37 AM

I wish someone could help me identify this:
http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...a-!!?highlight=

so that I could get the correct decals and badging on it when I refinish it ! I don't want to tag it as anything other than what it is !

Anybody ????

Cheers,
Joe

PS: I will likely strip, clean up and re-paint it and then leave it badgeless until I can find out just what it is.

Perhaps you should take the time to re-read my original post, and then take the time to understand it. I stated, clearly, that I had no intention of misrepresenting anything. Perhaps you put the "ignore feature" to work a little early.
