Identify a stem

Can anyone tell me what this stem is? I may be getting the bike it's installed on tomorrow and am confused about this stem, it's late 80's or early 90's Univega Alpina Pro mountain bike.

what are the markings

Often called a bullmoose style stem, IIRC.
The real-deal bullmoose setup is similar to that but one piece steam+bar combo. https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/i...4XI7cnIzZ7hQq9 |
The top marking is SR for Sakae-Ringyo (or however it's spelled)
I think the bottom set of markings are MTS-100. Velobase has the MTS 101, which it probably pre-dates. The only thing to be confused about would be finding replacement bars, seems like most these days are designed for single clamp stem. I guess I'd just mothball the stem/bars in a museum if you needed new bars for any reason. |

Looks like you already found out it was an SR MTS-100 aka "slingshot" style stem.
I had one that came on a Univega Alpina Pro, looks like it may have been the same color (purple/dark burgundy) so probably the same year. Mine was from 1984, so I don't think that one is from the early 90s. Edit: also, forgot to mention, moreso than bars being designed for a single clamp, this one has a different clamp diameter. It was made for bmx size bars (22.2), not standard mtb clamp diameter (25.4). I was able to put a 25.4 wald north road bar in there (8095 I think) with the bulged area centered in the stem and it worked alright, probably not ideal though. I think wald also offers a cruiser bar with 22.2 clamp diameter. |

Great, thanks for the info, I think I will replace if I buy the bike.

I've only worked on a couple of old Alpinas (I think they were both Unos), but they both had standard 1" steerers.

You may find that the steerer may be 21.1 instead of 22.2 limiting your stem choices.
