What are some general opinions on the Schwinn Premis?
There is a bike minus wheels on eBay for $100. I am pretty sure the bike was built in 1988.

I have very nice Suntour Supurbe hubs laced to Open Pro rims to complete the bike and was wondering what type of ride it will be.
The frame is my size and other Schwinn mid-range bikes of that era suit me well.

General thoughts are appreciated.

I have one and it rides great.
They are generally undervalued just because of the Schwinn name.
It will be interesting to see what you find out here, but I would bet the consensus is they are appreciated by those that actually have them.
If you have the wheel set and it doesn't go too high, I don't think you will be disappointed.

You are correct that it is from 1988. The Premis was a one year only model. Columbus Tenax steel and Sun Tour Cyclone components. :thumb:

Well, with $75 shipping, unless you split time in Racine, WI and can pick it up in person, it is already $175, for a mid grade Schwinn without wheels.

I like the Premis, and I am a fan of the white Cyclone bits. And the paint looks really good. So I would probably go for it if it does not go much higher.

I assume you are the only bidder (3 bids, so you are pretty interested). If you are not this original bidder, I would expect to see the price go up, probably quite a bit (because bidder #1 wants it).


One thing I have learned when I tap the bin for "free" parts. They are not really free, as I could have either sold them for real $$, or when I use them up, I eventually will have to replace them. The part I love about using parts from the bin is that I do not have to tap my wallet.

Thank you. You are correct about the parts. However, I look in my garage at the three wheel sets and 8-9 sets of hubs and picture them on a steel bike and me riding. (I am not very good about selling things)

I looked at the ad again on eBay and the bidding is going up - which means I will get outbid by someone with a little less control than myself.

Shame, WI has good beer and sausage - can you say road trip!!! I ride to eat.

I own both a schwinn premis and schwinn prelude from 1988. Those bikes ride amazingly well. I think the premis is my favorite bike I have andi also own a 88 centurion Dave Scott master, and 76 Peugeot px10. The Columbus tenax is very light...probably about as good as Columbus SL. The premis weighs 22lbs all original.

This is different from the one on Racine WI. CL? If I could find a facilitator I was thinking of buying that one for the parts.

My first real road bike was a 1988 Schwinn Premis, i loved that bike. Suntour Cyclone 7000 components...smooth hill climber...I have great respect for those framesets too!

The bid on eBay is up to $127. We'll see where it goes. I know $127 + $75 is too much for the bike, but if I can enjoy a couple of seasons of riding, it is worth it.
Maybe a RAIN. That is a goal.

$200 is not too much. But it probably has not stopped going up.

FWIW: There's another one on ebay, looks to be similar size, great condition, complete with matching wheels, $275, BIN $325, and $20 shipping (WTF?). The matching wheels are a big plus, as they will have the rare white Cyclone hubs.

Personally, if I am ready to pay $200, I would spend the extra and get the complete bike instead: matching wheels, cassette, tires, tubes, well worth the additional amount. You could spend some time and $$ later trying to round up those white Cyclone wheels.


Now $285 to $345 is not cheap for sure, depending on your market, it could be OK. Figure its pretty close to a Schwinn Tempo, with a nice rare group on it. And if it a bike you really want, I would go for it.


Look at it another way; say the entire group was for sale, including wheels. It might bring $200, possibly more. Very rare group, nice Cyclone build quality. There is a guy trying to sell a group on ebay right now, for $175. He won't get it. But look what is missing: no brake levers, no bb, no crank bolt covers, no headset, no wheels!!! That's a lot of missing stuff!


Then say the frameset was for sale: nice Schwinn Tenax, nice paint, etc. That might bring $150, plus shipping. So if it is EXACTLY what you want, here's a way to get them all at once, which is very convenient. And one risk in buying a group is that the seller omits a part. Example, I recently bought an Ole bike complete. Not only did it have Ole pedals, but it had handlebars with white coating to match the Ole stem. Had I bought it piecemeal, some parts would certainly have been MIA: Ole headset, Ole BB are two more examples. So I paid extra for the complete parts just to get it all in one place. I had been trying to accumulate an Ole group, piece by piece, over the last two years. So far, I had gotten a stem, RD, FD and levers. I had a long, long way to go. I finally figured out I was better off just finding a complete Ole bike instead.

As this auction continues, the BIN bike is going to be the better deal, and I would suggest is already the better deal (if it is the right size). Fortunately, its not my size...(As I talk myself into it. Lets see, a round trip to Greensboro, I'm crazy about the obscure Suntour groups, etc.). Heck, the Ole bike I picked up was not my size..

above post: agreed. With the matching hubs and all...worth it. For the record, i think i paid $400 even in 1989 for my 1988. Looks like they held the value well.

I agree with the full bike deal and did consider it.

I will consider the bike again if I lose the bid on the frame.
I get less grief from my wife if I buy a frame. I'm not sure I could buy another full bike without repercussions.
Somehow a frame does not equal a whole bike in her world. By the time I put it together, she forgets what bikes I have and do not have.

Just tell her you bought the frameset, and the seller threw in the wheels for "free". Then sell off your Superbe wheelset to offset part of the cost, and you will be way ahead $$ wise, and have a much more desirable, original and complete version.
