Early 1980s Trek

When I snagged my Falcon yesterday, I also picked up this Trek. It has 022 Ishiwata tubing. The headbadge is missing (bummer), but was not riveted to the frame. I am thinking maybe a Trek 412?

If there are rivet holes for a head badge then it is a 70's bike. Nice thing about older Treks is that you can look up the serial number and get the model and year:

I'd be guessing 80-81 if the head badge was glued on; my recognition skills are marginal, but are those Shimano 600 crarnks arn RD?

They look like SR and Suntour V/GT to me. I think the OP is close, thoughit may be a 510/12 depending upon whether or not it has a glued headbadge or not.

Nice bike. I think the early Ishiwata Treks are rather undervalued.

Did Trek have these made in Japan?

The Japanese connection did not start until '83-84ish (John Thompson can correct me here). They started with the rear triangles on certain models. In '86, the Elance series (300,310,400) were all Japanese made frames.

The headbadge was glued on. The serial number starts with M, so I believe that means 1980-81 Trek 412, unless you have anything else to look for!

Thoughts on the black rims with the vintage frame?

Black rims are OK for a build with black seatpost & bits but those say GIANT in bold letters, I'd pick others if possible. Purely aesthetics.

Well, if I used these, I'd definitely strip off the labels.

The only "other thing to look for" is in the case of a frame built (the date is the time the frame was stamped, not when it was built or when the bicycle was built or shipped) in the later part of a production year. Frames dated in say, calendar year 1983 could have been stored until bikes were being painted and assembled for the 1984 sales season, hence painted and assembled per 1984 specs, but carrying a 1983 s/n.

Any feature of paint, decals, or parts could have been modified, restored, or "upgraded" by the sequence of owners many vintage Trek frames have had. Whether the SunTour crank means it's a 1983 or not is irrelevant, since there's no way to know if it is actually the original crank. Many people back in the day had to "make my bike my own."

Black rims....personal choice. My '85 Trek 460 (entry level racer offering) has black Rigida's, dia-Compe 400's on a red Tru-Temper frame. Nice vintage Trek you have.

I just picked up a very similar frame, with serial number: M4G0XXX

M = 412 or 414
4 = 24" (61 cm ctc, 58cm top, 44.5cm stays)
G = July
0 = 1980

The only difference between the 412 and 414 that year that I could discern was the crank, seat post and toe clips:
https://www.vintage-trek.com/TrekBrochure1980.htm.

M2D9XXX for mine. So:

M: 412 or 414
2: 21"
D: April
9: The exception as the 412 /414 wasn't produced in a year ending in 9. Apparently, this means either '80 or' 81 due to the lack of a colorwrap behind Trek on the seat tube.

Mine did not have the color wrap behind the seat tube logo stickers either.

The black rims look great, but definitely better add gumwall tires to pull it off
