Nice looking hubs. I am going to attempt my first wheel build soon with a set of those hubs.

From the prices I have seen lately, the Tipo's seem to get plenty of love (it's the 27" Weinmann's that don't get any). With the round holes they have a nice retro look. I used to kind of turn my nose up at them, but they're probably the second-best hub until about the mid-1970's.

Wow. That completed auction list is eye opening for me. I haven't been shopping for them so was a bit surprised to see what they bring.
I really like mine. The races don't seem to be quite as highly finished as the Records, but they are still very smooth running. I built my first set of wheels last year using Tipos and some Sun M13 IIs. Very nice hubs.

So, what is with the tiny washers, kcOyef? Not a snark. Just curious. Were they necessary, or just for a bit of added security?

I'd venture to guess they add strength and guard the hub from spoke damage, to an extent. Plus, I think they look cool. I just like giving James a hard time.

I recently picked up a pair of hubs that look like that, just no little washers with them, also missing QR spindles. Pretty good shape, thinking about putting them on the Torpado I am rebuilding, using the concave Weinmann concave rims that are on it now, replacing the French High Flange hubs on it. May have to wait a while, just got to get the bike back together first, rebuilding wheels, that adds a WHOLE lot more work for me. Been a LONG time since I tackled a wheel rebuild. It CAN be scary! :-)

Usually they are not necessary if the spoke fits perfectly I just built a set on some Velo Orange PBP's and the spokes are so tight I didn't need the washer on one hub but needed them on the other.

Mechanically they relieve wear in the spoke hole on the flange so as the spoke tightens it crushes the Brass washer this also adds a bearing surface that the spoke as it moves up and down left and right in X-Y-Z co-ordinates a place to land and bang around without ovalizing the Spoke holes in the flange see?

A friend of mine has a set of Campagnolo hubs from the 50's with over 100,000 miles on them so they have spoke washers and he wont build any wheels without them another friend (both of these guys are master wheel builders riders racers work in a shop professionals) only puts them in when needed.

And the the best reasons of all I see them as Beautiful.

anyway if you can see through the spoke hole you need washers the spoke will ruin the hub
