Hot r Not (C&V)

I was advised to create a Hot r Not thread for older or more retro-looking bikes in the classic and vintage thread... for people who think steel is sexier then the lightest carbon frame! This is the same as the one in the road forums, just reply, well, hot or not. Have fun!

Not the best pictures, but a Jamis Coda Sport frame with some older components, mustache bars, and a homemade pannier.

It looks like a fun bike with an odd parts selection. I'll vote hot since I'm a sucker for weird mixes.

rhm 12-31-12 12:58 PM

Well, pardon me for pointing out the obvious, but if it's not hot enough to melt snow, it's not hot.

If you find a bike that melts the snow as you ride it I will be the first in line to buy it!

Maybe we should create Hot or Not - Anglo edition, Italian edition, American edition, etc. :)

So is this supposed to be like in the 41 where they critique the bikes as they are presented? Butthurt easy? :P

thinktubes 12-31-12 01:10 PM

Not: Threadless stem, BMX pedals, V-brakes, TIG, ect......

It's a Love/Hate thing, you loved it enough to buy but hate it enough to try to fix it with bags and bars and stuff. I did the same thing with a Clubman, hung a vintage Raleigh logo leather saddle bag on it to make me feel better.

Yeah, it's modern by my standards, but it's steel and tips its hat to tradition, so I think it is a nice take on a modern randonneuring theme, - AND it has no brifters (thank God!)

Nice job on that pannier BTW, Refresco!

Whole-heartedly agree about the V-brakes... came stock with the bike. Saving up for some Gran-cru canti's!

noglider 12-31-12 01:22 PM

Velognome, I think your bike is hot, in case I haven't said it enough already.

Thank you! I just finished it the other day. Maybe I'll do a forum about it... there are a couple DIY pages about converting messenger bags to panniers but I did it a little differently

Do one! A lot of guys would be interested in this.

I have some C&V bikes that I think are hot, anyone agree?

The Jeunet is city bike hot:

As is my wife's Raleigh Tora:

And the mystery model Bianchi is on it's way to Hot, and will hopefully be there one day soon:

Also, the DeKerf has some hottness to it:

As does the bent Ironman (now a SS, time for a new photo I guess):

Lose the STI's on the bianchi and it's fine ;) Digging the rack on the mixte frame, is that a Wald?

The STI's are original equipment and Dura-Ace so they stay. Also, to me Dura-Ace 7400 = definition of hot.

The rack on the mixtie is a Wald 135, but I think we prefer the 139 more - the wider shape is more practical than the deep one.

Really like this. Thank you for not over-celesteing it.

With matching front/rear wheels it would be super hot. Maybe polished H+Son Archetypes? They come in hard anno too.

Tashi, the Jeunet is hot ! I like it.

Lots of Hottness potential, but lots of work to be done:

shifter location - move 'em up
bartape - white is hot, and will match the saddle and decals
bar/brake lever setup - seriously.
seat height - low seat heights are never hot.
rear rack - hot if chrome or colour matched. Best if paired with a front matching one and matching fenders.
pedals - reflectors are never hot. Clips and straps (with white leather straps perhaps?) required for hottness on road/sporty bikes.
tires - dry rot ain't hot. High quality skinwalls = hot. I'd get Grand Bois or Challenge in a 28c. Mmmm, comfy and fast.

My long-term plans for the bike include a new powdercoat, I think all-Celeste frame and fork with the same style branding. I really like white saddles and bar tape (and have $$ invested in it!) and think things get a little jumbled with the black on the fork and frame. No more celeste than that though, ugh. Matching wheels will follow; my original inclination was for polished low-pro rims like Ambrosio's or similar, but then I mounted the Grand Bois' on my wife's wheels with black rims and machined sidewalls and they really make the wheels pop!

So many hott options!

Thanks! I like it quite a bit. I'd like to get around to taking some detail pics, it's an interesting bike that I've done some weird things to.

Yeah. Those tires are hotness for sure.

I dunno, part of the appeal for me is the rough paint. You or someone has ridden the hell out of that bike, and that's pretty hot.

tashi 12-31-12 02:39 PM

This is why it's in refurb mode right now:

http://sphotos-a.ak.fbcdn.net/hphoto...17350788_n.jpg

JRA when it just started climbing the cogstack into the spokes. Couldn't stop in time. Bike is currently in the shop getting bent back into shape, and one of the guys there gave me another DA 7400 rear d. to try out.

To quote a fellow bikenerd when I posted the mangled derrailleur on FB: "Jesus kills an angel every time an 8sp Dura-ace derailleur dies." Ugh.
