Missing dust cap on a pedal... how important is that? Any replacements?
I'm working on a 1977 Raleigh bike with no name pedals (they are stamped "made in england" on the vertical portion of the pedal body closest to the crank when installed). I hadn't noticed it missing until now. I know I could get new pedals, but I really don't have any reason to replace these pedals, minus the missing dust cap. And, I don't know if the threading is the same as say cheap replacements currently available like an MKS dust cap. Calls to local bike shops have come up dry (nothing available at all), as has the local bike coop. Glueing a beer cap on isn't going to work because the beer cap isn't deep enough. Anyone ran into this issue and found a solution?

Might get lucky on ebay, or scrounge the junk bins at bike stores...

Roll your bike into Home Depot, no one will bat an eye. Take it right into the plumbing section. There they have copper caps for 3/4" copper pipe. The cap actually has a 7/8" interior diameter; you're supposed to sweat solder it onto a 3/4" pipe. Anyway, try it on your pedal where the dust cap is missing. I bet it will fit passably. You'll be able to tell before you buy it. You will have to cut a half inch or so off it, otherwise it will stick out too far.
Obviously, this may not work. But if I know the pedals you have, I think it will. |
Are they close in size to MKS caps? Those you can get, but they are not cheap.

Pending finding a more permanent solution, just clean and degrease the body well and stick a piece of duct tape over it to prevent further possible contamination. It's not pretty but it's a viable temporary fix.

I've got the cap off a bottle of Sprite on one of my pedals. Been there for a year or more, though don't ride it all that often.

Its a personal thing - If every time you look at your bike you see the missing dust cap then your in trouble...

Post a pic! Chances are very good that someone can tell you exactly what the pedal is and what options you have for replacing the cap perfectly. Someone might even have a spare!
