Patina War
Category 1; The bike you refuse to repaint despite the looks you get from the neighbors, the derision you get from the wife and the lectures you get from the landlady.
Category 2: Last photo before the sandblaster. May the ugliest bike win. My Category 1;http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/l...n/IMG_7139.jpg My category 2:http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/l...n/IMG_1798.jpg |

I'm not worthy. True, my bikes have patina, but not to the extent you describe in the OP.

Sixties or seventies Peugeot PX10, the way I got it and just before I painted it (pretty much same thing but I had to do the test ride first)...
http://www.mytenspeeds.com/My_TenSpe...Build_BB_2.jpg http://www.mytenspeeds.com/My_TenSpe...eat_Tube_1.jpg ...bent frame/fork set, and all... http://www.mytenspeeds.com/My_TenSpe...ft_Close_1.jpg http://www.mytenspeeds.com/My_TenSpe...3_Repair_1.jpg Had to get out my best paint brush to pretty her up... http://www.mytenspeeds.com/My_TenSpe...TQF_Left_5.jpg The bike I am working on now is in even worse shape, cosmetically. |
Patina, patina... if only it weren't a bad thing on a steel frame. :)
If only bike frames could age like Henry Moore sculptures! |
Nice folder, man...........

Given the quality of the paintwork it's probably Italian.

My unknown German pre war bike. Ugly and attractive.

ftwelder has some gems which should be pictured here!
I traded this Patina Queen Raleigh Super Course to 10speedterror for a Brooks B15. http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p...F46496B376.jpg http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p...F3FAB4102E.jpg http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p...F43ED3614A.jpg Couldn't bring myself to paint it and couldn't find a reason to build it. I wonder if he's done anything with it yet? |
bungled Moto... not sure what to do. Probably remove the rust with alu foil and the cover it with clear coat to prevent further rusting, and maybe some fun cat stickers to cover the scars.

My first offering is a Raleigh Golden arrow (I am sure you all have seen, my word) that lived under a downspout. This one was carefully polished and nothing else (rims were replaced). As found first.

My 1950 Raleigh Clubman is similarly patina-ed to PedalTraveler's above as it spent most of its life on Boston's north shore, soaking up the salt water.
As found: https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-o...50Clubman3.jpg After rehab: https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-2...0/IMG_5574.JPG And to add to Frank's collection, I picked this one up for him a few weeks back: https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-5...BD5F7A6A91.JPG |
This thread is what C&V should be all the time, just wishing.
I repainted my India Herc in my "bike youth" now wish I hadn't, but it still looks bad. http://davidnewtonguitars.squarespac...c%20saddle.jpg Here's how it looked originally. http://davidnewtonguitars.squarespac...dia%20herc.jpg |

Almost all of the bikes in my fleet would probably qualify in this thread, but here's the latest--a patina-ed Legnano:

This pre-war frame has got a nice warm glow to the bare steel. Here is my patina offering. I don't think it looks junky, more old and dignified. My co-workers think it looks old and junky. They can all go to heck! http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8230/8...0201ce96_b.jpg DSC06223 by mkeller234, on Flickr http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8187/8...3bec1440_b.jpg DSC06228 by mkeller234, on Flickr http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8364/8...c9740f46_b.jpg DSC06237 by mkeller234, on Flickr |
Some lovely bikes there...
Actually, here's an idea for you all to chew on... Have any of you seen choppers with oiled, bare metal frames? They get the 'rainbow patina' effect by oiling the parts (fenders, gas tank, frame tubes, etc.) and then carefully heating them so that the oil bakes into the surface of the metal. I seem to recall they do this with an oven rather than naked flame. The effect has to be maintained by periodically re-oiling it. |
