I really appreciate a nice balance of form and function. Were this my bike I think I'd have to sell that DA and mount some more modern Campy. A glossy black, silver or the anthracite would be my choices regarding color.

How did you fill with paint? Just put a heavy coat on and then wipe off?

Yep, just paint it in with a small model brush, wait a few minutes, then wipe away with a clean rag and a light amount of mineral spirits: http://www.raydobbins.com/misc/paintfill_tips.htm

BMW Sparkling Graphite?

Yes.

I've found myself with three bikes nearly that color. I dig it.

Absolutely!

An excellent solution.

I do as well.

Forum member Sloar is painting one for me now.

Ferrari red windows though.

While I agree with you in spirit, I don't think my wallet does. The Dura Ace bits that I have are far from perfect, so I don't think I would net much in their sale. I will keep this in mind for the future though.

I've been slow on this project, but it's finally seeing some love.

Here's a teaser pick with paint. The metallic flake doesn't show in the photo well at all. I'm using local hobbyist named Jim who was recommend cyclotoine. The colour is exactly what I was hoping for, and he's done a great job of keeping the paint nice and thin. Just applied decals last night. It'll get cleared this weekend.

That looks very nice and quite close to the one I have here in a gunmetal gray. Actually, I think yours looks nicer.:thumb:

Can you message me with the info of your painter? I am in Victoria and also need a frame painted. Thanks.

repechage 07-13-13 08:15 AM

I think this project is turning out quite well.

So, I might sound like an idiot, because I do not know much about bikes. But, I have a 'Maserati' made in Italy with original parts on it ill sell you for $100! Ha are a masi and a Maserati similar?

She's home!

Wow, that looks great! The painter should have greased the BB shell. He painted the threads!

That he did. Threads will be tapped and faced regardless, but I was a little surprised when I saw that. He's a hobby painter who does a lot of specialized small work, of which bicycles are just a tiny part of his work. He still has a bit to learn, but I'm really happy for a sub $200 paint job.

ColonelJLloyd 07-17-13 10:05 AM

Right on. You came out well for sure.

repechage 07-17-13 10:08 AM

Seat stay tops are asking for yellow paint fill.

Yeap. I'm planning on doing them myself. Would have cost me a fair bit to have the painter dip into a second colour.

It's been a long time coming, but here she is in all her glory. haha. Took it for a shakedown ride yesterday, 20k or so. A few minor adjustments to the shifters, but overall very successful. This is my first bike in almost 3 years that has indexed shifting. While I enjoy the simplicity of friction shifting, this is really a treat. Dura ace 7402 shifts incredibly well.

Still need to infill paint the seat stay tops...

Turned out nice. Great color.

wrk101 08-12-13 05:23 PM

Really inspirational! I have two MASIs right now, both with paint issues, neither my size. Go figure.

mikemowbz 08-12-13 06:52 PM

That certainly turned out. Great-looking paint for an affordable local deal, and I concur with others on the colour.

Some old-school clear cable housing might be a bit more subtle, but the yellow does pop with the decals/infill.

Great find, great build/restoration.

jeirvine 08-12-13 08:06 PM

Love it. I particularly like that style of Masi fork crown. Pure class.

A vast majority of the high end frames I've owned have had the threads painted....not a big deal.

Wow, looks like you win this round. Ouch.

Not quite as deep a wound. But when I was a kid we owned two houses on one big lot. ALL through my childhood a black 49 Mercury 2 door sat in the driveway of the other (vacant) house, just waiting for me to get old enough. When I was about 12 or 13, I came home from school one day, and it was gone. I can't remember, but I think I cried.,,,,BD

Was bone stock, like this one.. Paint was completely dulled out, of course..
