RIP Dave Martinez

I just found out that Classic Rendezvous forum member Dave Martinez was in a collision with a car while riding yesterday morning in the Bay Area and passed away at the scene.

I am not sure if he participated here but he was a really sweet guy and gave me some good info about my Cinelli and Bianchi.

So sad right now...

I don't know the guy but am sad to hear of his passing. :(

I don't know if Dave had a "handle" here or not, but I add my condolences and shock about his untimely death...my contacts with him were few and far between but he was truly a "class act". I always felt better after corresponding with him, even about the most trivial BS.
He will be missed.

I love that site! So sad!

I probably bought or sold from him at some point. It is sad to see another fellow cyclist down. Life is fragile and fleeting so go hug your kids/spouse or significant other and make sure they know you love them. we are none of us guaranteed tomorrow.

I have lost another friend I never met.

From what I found online, no details of the accident were released but the driver stayed at the scene and was fully cooperative. I'm going to go read my Rene Herse book and try not to think about this right now...

Whoa that is craZy as i just road that exact road for the first time just a few hours after he was killed yesterday as part of our "round the south bay" metric.

Dave was a great friend that I had never met in person, even though we spoke regularly by phone and email. I sold him a number of bikes over the years and facilitated a few more when he needed linguistic support for purchases out of Italy. He was definitely one of the go-to people for any information about vintage Cinelli bikes. In fact I always considered him to be one of the leading experts anywhere in the world about the marque. He was simply passionate about bikes and they represented a major part of his life. The last time I spoke to him was following his last participation in the Eroica ride in October, where he went with his wife.

I will miss him.

I never met him, but corresponded with him off list over the past years. He was very knowledgeable of all things Italian and very generous with his knowledge. He gave me a lot of feedback on my Altenburger Cinelli and my early 50s Bianchi, and was obviously a very kind person who was more than happy to share his time and knowledge with folks that he'd never met. A real loss.

I'm certain that he's leaving a large void in the lives of those around him. Very sad.

I have hesitated to comment because I did not know the man, and cannot remember having had any contact with him. Nevertheless, I want to record my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and velo-colleagues who knew him, or had contact with him. Everything points to his being missed by a lot of folks.

This comment is prompted by my remembering that one of my best friends was hit by an intoxicated driver near Victoria BC. (The driver was never charged, nor did he ever apologize.) My friend lost his life on the spot.

This is not to suggest that the driver in this case was in any way a miscreant. Accidents, in the true sense of the word, do happen. Moreover, we do not know the circumstances. But, Mr Martinez's catastrophe might well remind all of us that our chosen vocation is not without risk. We must remind ourselves of what we have to do to try and protect ourselves, as well as educate our children in all matters of cycling safety and precaution.

May all the winds be at your back from now on — fellow traveller.

This has been shocking and very sad for me. While I never met him in person, I considered him a friend. He shared with me a wealth of knowledge that I hope I can pass along in the same great manner Dave was able to do.

My heart goes out to his loved ones. Death is hardest on the living.
