Roll Call: Westminster Swap Meet 2013

Two weekends from now, Sunday, February 10th, 2013, is what is advertised as the largest indoor swap meet on the East Coast. It is held at the Carroll County Agricultural Center in Westminster, Maryland. I plan to be there in a vendor space along with a few guys under the name Gruppo Classic Rendezvous. We will be on the little handout map, as I understand it.

Anyone else going to be there?

EDIT: I am calendar challenged. Thanks for straightening me out Howard!

I will be there, selling a couple of prints and my comic book, plus a couple of actual bike parts. Syke and I are under my name.

I'll be there. I'll be bringing a few bikes with me to see how they'll do in the bike lot. It's about a two hour drive from the eastern shore of MD, but I've never been so I figured I'd check it out. I saw it advertised in the bike section of CL this morning. Have you done the show before? Their website was limited - what's it like? Are there considerable parts/bike vendors? Or is it filled with LBS's trying to ditch their '12's and people trying to get you to buy new windows and siding?

I've done it for many years now. Great fun, sometimes great deals... I've found some good stuff there. Generally better buying than selling IMO.

Thanks for straightening me out Howard. I fixed the original post. Stop by and say hello. You'll recognize me as being the youngest guy in the group and with red hair.

It's a pretty good swap. I did better at this swap last year than any other I sold at. There is a good mix of everything as I recall, though I didn't have much time to shop since I was there mostly to sell.

I'll be looking forward to it! Should I be worried about my hand getting crushed? This 'put the handshake on you' stuff has me a tad worried.

This year I'm looking to buy some bargains. Last year sold enough to pay the table fee and gas money.

How are the crowds?

Last time I went (7-8 years ago) it was wall to wall people and aisles were so crowed (like Times Square New Years Eve photos) you could barely get to see what was on the tables. I use a cane for walking which made it doubly tough. Don't mean to imply that anyone was "pushy," just shoulder to shoulder. I picked up a couple of great items but it got more crowded as time went on, so I finally gave up and left. Is it still this "busy?" I would like to try it again.

7 or eight years back would have likely been in the old ag center, which was pretty much a tight, cramped, maze. A few years back they moved into the new ag center, which is a lot roomier. It's still crowded, but it is far less of the cattle call it used to be.

I didn't attend until last year... They expanded the space according to the website:
We're excited to announce that for 2013 it has finally happened...we've taken over the whole building!

It's a bit random for buying (duh) but still pretty good. Usually there's a fair amount of consumables (bar tape, etc) and if you are lucky, a deal or two. I picked up my Serotta roadie there for 175$, a Lightspeed frame for 350$, a Vitus for 35$, and I always find a few unexpected things-- last year, a pair of Cinelli stems for a fiver. You just really cannot go looking for anything in particular; your search has to be pretty general IME.

It helps a lot to have a table-- mine usually pays for itself-- so you get in early. However, should you do this, I recommend wearing winter clothes, as the building is open and cold until shortly before the public is let in (they then turn on the heat).

If anyone wants a ride up from RVA, I am leaving at about three in the morning day of the show.

I remember, most of what I sold was your stuff, while you were out checking the other tables. Didn't you sell your TREK to the person who test rode one of my (cheaper) bikes first?

I wonder if FFR will return this year. I missed them last year but did buy their 411R late summer.
