CENTURION EXPERT...pulled off of ebay at the last minute....

I hate when people do this. It was a "pick up only", and today was the last day. I already had placed a bid, and was going to put in my final offer this afternoon, when an email came that the auction was cancelled.

I contacted the person, who said that there was "nothing dishonest, there was an error in the listing". Yeah, right. Six days later you found an error? Don't place an item in for cheap if you're afraid of it not selling for more.

My 2 cents worth....

I have had that happen to me twice in the last few months. The second time it happened the guy relisted the bike exactly the same as the original listing a few days later. I didn't bid on the second listing and it sold for less than my max bid for the first listing so I felt a wee bit of vindication.

How was the price? Was it below a 'normal' value for it? Its always possible he got an offer from a different source but you never know.

Something funky like that happened when I bought my Equinox. I didn't win but my max bid was higher than the winner. a day or two later I get a message saying I have a second chance offer. I really feel like I got scammed somehow but I bought the bike anyway.

I saw it starting at $90, but found out he had a Buy It Now for $300. It was up to $119.....so I was hoping to get it at $150. Apparently he got itchy feet and took it off.....or someone made him a good offer.

Don't see what the beef is here. The it's 100% legal for a seller to end an aution within 12 hours of the close date. The idea of "reporting them to ebay" is laughable.

I used to sell on ebay a lot, started in '98. Don't do it anymore, too complicated, too many scams, too much hijinx.

I remember the days where as long as a bid was placed and it met reserve, you could not end your auction prematurely. This was to prevent potential buyers from subverting ebay and arranging a deal outside of ebay. Ebay goes to great lengths these days to maintain a similar policy: if you send an ebay PM to anyone else, it will strip any email address from the PM. Might do this for phone numbers too, not sure.

I'm not "reporthing" them (use spell check). I just hoped to get a good deal, plain and simple. I'm sure you all have. I've never done this when I used to sell on ebay. I put in a fair price to begin with. If it sells, great. If not, I keep it. Plain and simple

Per ebay policy page, if you are the highest bidder and the seller did not sell to you when ending the listing, they must pay a fee to ebay. This applies when the listing has more than 12hrs left. < 12 hr I don't think they can cancel it.
http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/end_...l#requirements

Of course, non of these rules are hard and fast; there might be other way to circumvent the fee.

But in the end, ebay is there to facilitate between willing sellers and buyers. It cannot force a sale/buy nor does it have authority like a cop. After 1 transaction, I am done with ebay. Much less headache elsewhere for some more money.

Consider yourself warned. I've had two transactions where the seller declared the item "unavailable" after being paid, then I got a refund. There is no recourse in such a case. A seller can do anything he really wants, including fraudulently stating that the item "got lost". The only recourse is to leave negative feedback. You don't even have that option in your case! I'd move one, learn the lesson, develop a thick skin or stop risking getting your feelings hurt on EBay. It's (EBay) not for everyone. I know, I've got a pretty thin skin, but, am trying to "buck up" over time.

OTOH, I've never had a bad experience (one close call) dealing with the good folks here at bikeforums.net.

I hope you realize my comment was tongue in cheek (a nod to KonAaronSnake's reference to a Violent Femmes song).

I had a similar experience. I actually won an auction for a Colnago with full c-record at far below market value. After the auction closed, the seller claimed that the bike was in a wreck and no longer available. Of course, he waited until 2 hours after the auction closed to come up with that story. The price was so good, I said I'd just take the parts. Claimed it had been taken away by the police after the accident.

I've had a good number of transactions on eBay both as a seller and buyer and I have had a very good experience thus far (knock on wood), though not without problems. But I suppose that is to be expected. As anixi says, thick skin. In seriousness, I do agree with the OP that it's a bummer when you get excited about a great deal only for the seller to decide they aren't so fond your "fortune".

The draw to ebay for me is the potential for below market deals. If I am going to pay anything close to full value for something, I am going to get it somewhere where there is less risk and more recourse than a red mark for misrepresented junk. Doing this requires a lot of hunting and pecking but I can usually find what I am looking for in a short period of time at a price I am willing to pay.

The exception being my current search for a bike. I have been searching since August and keep coming up empty handed. I have been searching CL and asking around but in regards to the bikes I am interested in, my area seems to have dried up recently.
