1992 Specialized StumpJumper Comp - A Time Machine!
I went to the 2013 Midwest Bicycle Expo & Swap Meet last Sunday and walked away with this!
It is an all original 1992 Specialized StumpJumper Comp The guy I bought it from said that he bought it new for his wife and she only rode it a handful of times before they put it in storage. He also noted that most of the damage on the frame is from transporting it in a Uhaul from California. The pictures you will see are the bike as I bought it. I havn't had time to tear it down and clean it thoroughly yet. The best part is that the whole bike only cost me $100 I won't be selling this bike anytime soon! Nice find. I love the pink paint. I can't open the catalog in the link but that is the UK version, the US is likely to be different.

The catalog is actually a German version, but the specs on the German version seem to match up with the components on mine.

Excellent score, congrats! I'm a big fan of Specialized MTBs from that era, they're nice bikes and are somewhat under-appreciated now, which makes them a great value.

From the wear on it, it looks as it has been ridden more than he let on.
However, that is still a nice price for a bombproof bike with great components. You did well. |

I just wanted share the picture of my bike. It's a Stumpjumper Comp from 1992. I bought it new in California and have been riding it since.

Great bike. I'm a big fan of vintage specialized stumpjumpers. I own a 1991 team (prestige tubing, suntour xc components) and a 1988 comp (tange tubing and deore xt components).

I am a fan as well, though I don't own one. I would argue that they are not under appreciated. The prices around here support that view and is the reason I don't have one! Although it is a step down in the line up, I am very happy with my 97 RockHopper. It has DB tubes and weighs less than 28 lbs without accessories. It is now my commuter with the option of being an off road ride with a 15 min swap to a suspension fork.

@ MrFizzle - nice score. It's gorgeous, and I hope you post your tear down, after photos, etc. really lucky for $100. I bought, what turns out to be, a 1992 Specialized Hardrock Ultra from the original owner for $45. Of course it had a Shimano 200GS Grouppo on it which I'm in the process of replacing.

Does anyone know which year Specialized switched to 1 1/8" headsets for the Stumpjumper? There's a 1992 Stumpjumper listed near me (looks similar to the one in this post) and I want to get one with a 1 1/8" compatible head tube so that I can use a wider range of forks. Thanks! |

No worries, but you may not get any response, you will however probably generate some great new posts, I have an 86 Stumpy that is mostly original but will be a donor for an 82? that is my size, bi-plane fork, etc. no pics atmo. ;) |
My elder son's first mountain bike was a Specialized HardRock of the same model year. As he grew and after I bought him a Cannondale Rush for a graduation present, he passed the HardRock on to his younger brother. I believe yours is the next-higher model, with superior frame tubing similar to what I have on my 1988 Schwinn Team Issue Project KOM-10 (that year's Paramountain equivalent). I too, am a fan of these old non-suspension mountain bikes.

Nothing better than an MTB converted to a roadie with drops...26 inch tires with slicks so plush and stable. You got a really nice bike. I hope it goes well fixing it up. It looks like all it really needs is some fresh grease in the hubs and a cleaned up chain. Fun stuff. |

Out of jealousy, a friend bought a 93. IIRC his rigid model is 1" threaded, and has a rear brake noodle vs 92 stop. The catalog lists the FS as oversize, though. |

I have one of these in drop bar form. Really a fun bike. Unfortunately a PO swapped out the fork for a suspension model, but I found this Tange chrome one at an LBS.
