1972? Peugeot UE 8

Still working on restoration as per earlier post re rear fender light and have another question. Did Peugeot ever use Suntour Spirt front deraileur in early '70s ? Maybe this isn't as original as I initially thought ?? Thanks.

I saw one last weekend with Suntour derailleurs. It was at a swap meet and IIRC the shift levers were Simplex, so we were kind of thinking that neither the derailleurs nor the front wheel were original. The rear rim had a dimpled braking surface, and the front was smooth. There was something else, I thought, that wasn't quite right, but it was minor. Might have been a missing light part. Heck, might have been the same bike.
So if you weren't near Indy last weekend, maybe Spirts were original equipment. Don't know.

I'm no Peugeot expert, but thought it was a really nice bike, excellent shape.

I didn't get a chance to talk with the guy who brought it because someone from the next booth was pushing pretty hard about a Lambert or something, and I didn't want to get in the way.

Most, if not all, of the Peugeots in the ealryh 70's used Simplex shifters and derailleurs exclusively. The entire bike was made of European components.
I sold Peugeots for many years, and there was a time approx. 1983 or so that the first 2 low end road bikes used SunTour stem shifters, Spirt front derailleur and Honor rear derailleurs. At that point , the models had switched over to alloy Solida cotterless cranksets from the older cottered crank versions. Any mix mash of Simplex and SunTour is an aftermarket addition. The bike with dimpled rims and Simplex would be from the late 60's to early 70's time frame.

Thank-you for the reply and if you sold Peugeots for years in early '70s you would know. This Suntour Sprit seems a fairly robust F derailleur and I suspect much better than the original Simplex. However, if the bike is to be "as original " I will start searching for the correct F derailleur as well as rear light lens.
