What is this? Carlton??

Hello!
I found this bike in eBay and got it for 38.. Pretty good I think. I have no idea what make it is not how old it is but it looks pretty old to me. Anyone have any ideas? I found a seril number on the bb but its only four digits long.
As you can see I'm stripping it ready to paint, never done this before. Any advice for how to paint it?

Thank you

Very cool head lugs. I don't know but I bet someone will ID those BB cutouts.

No rivet holes for a head badge?

Could you tell if the paint you stripped off was original? What color was it?

Do a search of the forums for DIY painting. It's a topic that's been discussed often and at length.

no holes for the head badge, i did find the remains of the reynolds sticker under the first coat of paint. It looks like the original colour was red. Gonna post the original pic that they had on ebay.

The seatstay tops don't look Carlton to me, but I'm not conclusive. The lug for the light on the fork leg is just like the one on a Carlton that I had.

That lug for a headlamp was required by law on British (road) bikes for a number of decades - dont recall what year it ceased.

I think the headlugs might be an "Oscar Egg" product, not sure what model or what years Carlton used them...might even be a Carlton-built Raleigh but looks to be earlier than that buy-out.
Certainly these aren't the "easy" to ID Carlton lugs like Capella or Flyer...

The pump pegs look exactly like the ones on my '59 Carlton.

Not exactly conclusive, I know.

The cutouts look 70s to me, not 50s. I know some Raleighs used those cutouts (Pro track).

Sorry, looked at the pics. I'm baffled. That does seem to be the Carlton cutout but frame is certainly older than 70s.
