Spumoni Pinarello Montello

A few months after unknowingly buying a very dented and damaged Eddy Merckx Corsa Extra on ebay (read all about it here: https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...x-Ebay-Dilema/) I stumbled upon a very vague Craigslist posting about a Pinarello road bike.

Pinarello custom racing bike
Shimano 600 breaks
Colombus SLX frame
Shimano 600 sprocket
Concour seat
Time Multiflex pedals
Measurements:
center to top-23 3/4
center to center of sprocket- 25
top tube-22 1/2
wheel diameter- 26 inches
Rode less than a dozen times
Call or text for pics
Needless to say I texted for pics and got these two in return:

I went over after work and while the bike hadn't been ridden that much, it definitely wasn't in perfect condition either. The grease in the headset was dry to the point where it was very difficult to turn the bars, there was some rusting of the chrome, the wheels weren't true, the tires rotted, and the bike was very dirty overall. But the paint was in very good shape, somehow the extremely fragile decals were intact, and most importantly it was a Montello in my exact size. We settled on a fair price and I left to rehab this neglected bike.

I began the tear down process and started hunting ebay and craigslist for the necessary components to modernize it enough to be my go-to road bike.

The original headset had a cracked crown race so after a fruitless search, it was replaced with a Dura Ace Cartridge unit.

The frame got a thorough cleaning, some spot treatment with oxalic acid, a little blue magic metal polish and some wax to top it all off.

Beautiful job! I absolutely love the colour scheme. The only thing I might mention is to my eye there is a lot of black in the front end considering how light and airy the rest of the bike looks. What about white tape and a white saddle?!? It looks awesome as it stands, anyway, well done.

Upgrades

To make it my go-to bike I made the following changes:

-10 Speed Campagnolo Chorus Shifters (Rebuilt to 9-speed)
-3TTT Ergopower Due bars to replace the ugly/too wide ergo bends
-Dura-Ace HP 7410 Cartridge Headset to replace the damaged 600 one
-Mavic Open Pro Wheelset at 130mm to match the rest of my fleet
-SRAM 12-26 8 Speed Cassette
-Dura-Ace 7700 Crankset
-Ultegra RD-6500GS Rear Derailleur (couldn't use the Hubbub routing on the old one)
-Selle San Marco Regal Ti Saddle
-Dura-Ace SP 7400 Aero Seatpost
-Fizik Microtex Bar Tape
-Jagwire cables
-King Stainless Bottle Cages
-Continental GP4000S 700c x 25 tires

I originally built it up with Panaracer Paselas 700c x 28, but after a few group rides they proved to have too much rolling resistance and made too much noise at 20+ mph, not to mention a bike of this caliber deserves better tires than that.

After:

Nice. I love the Forma SL bars myself but they do look to have a very deep drop in your "before" photos.

Also, I am glad to hear the Merckx issue worked out.

You're welcome to them for the cost of shipping if you want. I'm just not a huge fan of ergo bends.
