Happy New Year!
And welcome to the year of the Water Snake, if you are Chinese.
If you are not Chinese, and have already failed in your New Year's resolutions, consider this a second chance!! Order in Chinese food and start over. Gong Xi Fa Cai to everyone here! |

Happy New Year to you too! Unfortunately, the Chinese Food on the east side of Detroit sucks. The frozen stuff at Trader Joes tastes a lot better. But probably, homemade is the best! |
Thanks! and same to ya. Have to add, we had Jiao Zi, (dumplings), the traditional New Years feast, last night that we made by head lamps and candles while the power was out. At least the gas was still flowing and boiling dumplings helped keep the kitchen above freezing. Just one small correction, Devinfan; it's the year of the Snake. Not water snake. I 'm a snake, 1953, so the highly venomous water snake may be more appropriate in my case, however.;)
My wife's parents at the dumplings. Guo nian hao! http://i1227.photobucket.com/albums/...psed347c7e.jpg http://i1227.photobucket.com/albums/...pseb75cadc.jpg |
Those are amazing pictures!!! I'm taking a break from relentless all day dumpling making myself right now! It IS water snake this year, and coincidentally 1953 was water snake too, the 5 elements follow 5 year cycles that overlay the 12 animals. This is the first water snake since 1953, so I guess this is your year, rootboy!

Oh RIGHT! I got ya! . Had to ask my wife. Gold, wood, water, fire and earth. And this is a water year. Thanks for the correction.
I should know this but will blame my Chinese wife for not giving me the whole story. ;) Happy dumplings! What did you use for filling? |
Happy Lunar New Year! Gung Hey Fat Choy to you guys too! Eat and drink plenty!

We signed divorce papers today...
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!! <font size="7"><strong> |
Happy new year guys.
Though I'm not Chinese, I had the opportunity to celebrate Chinese New Year for a few years in style... An acquintance was involved in the citizen's council of our local Chinatown, and he always asked guys from my student house to help out with the proceedings. Our job was to position a group of Chinese exchange students with a rope in a semicircle at the storefronts where fireworks were lit and a cabage with some money was offered to a big dancing dragon. Funny thing was, all these students were freshmen, straight out of China, and there wasn't any common language between us, so it was always quite a handful to get them through the crowds of fat and annoying shoppers that wanted to get as close to fireworks as possible to take pics with their stupid cellphones! The best part of the day obviously was the ensuing meal and beers :). |

^ that's a bad wildlife encounter... Maybe as bad as that dude that got hit by a Springbok last year :)

They're probably going to make dumpling filling out of that thing. ;) Jeezum, can you imagine running over that!

Trader Joe's pot stickers for $2.99 a bag are a steal, much better than Costco, but there is nothing quite like homemade. Very envious!
I headed out the door at 5:30 tonight to check out and buy a clean Fuji S-12-S with a triple crank, near Auchehcrow's house. Given Fuji's popularity in Auchencrow's latest poll, it may be worth as much as that Trek 620 on ebay! :roflmao2: Anyway, since it is New Years and I was already 15 miles from home, I took a detour and swung by the eastside's "Chinatown" at Dequindre and 13 Mile. It's more aptly described as an Asian strip mall. It was my first visit. Anyway, the bakery was 86 on roast pork buns, but Liang's Chinese BBQ was open. The BBQ pork is not as good as what I make, but the roast duck is highly recommended. At $10 for a large 1/2 duck, it is a tasty bargain! Enjoying both with some fried rice I made the other day. |
Happy New Year to you folks. Missed out going to S.F to see my family but we still celebrated. Food here is not the same here in Phoenix but it's still traditional. Miss the seaweed soup, mung bean thread with shrimp, and steamed chicken. Thanks for reminding me to pass out the red envelopes too.

Happy New Year, all! :) I'm a dumb white boy myself, LOL, but I have a Filipina step-mom, & a half-sister & half-brother from her. They live in PA, so I rarely see them, but we get along really well. This is almost too weird to be true, but I get my calendars from Uwajimaya's, an Asian grocery store, and I knew it was the year of the snake. But I DIDN'T know the day of the New Year, and yet I hung that calendar yesterday, as if I knew what I was doing. :D I wish I had known though, all I had for dinner was a mac n cheese/leftover chili goulash. I could have had some nice teriyaki chicken or something. ;)

Jeese Rootboy, you make beautiful C&V stuff yourself, you have great bikes, good taste and now I learn a Chinese wife that can cook traditional dishes like I love. If I didn't have a beautiful Mexican wife that cooks her dishes from Mexico so well I'd be jealous of you, wait, I only have my CAAD 10 4, no C&V as of yet, I am now jealous of you, its official.
A very happy Chinese New year to you and to everyone here at C&V. Bill |

A very happy Chinese New year to you and to everyone here at C&V. Bill BTW, I consider myself the luckiest guy in the world. There's just no describing what a wonderful woman my wife is. Her parents have lived with us for some years, after emigrating over from Beijing. When some folks hear that my in-laws live with us, their eyes bug out and they ask me how I can stand it. All I can say is that I'm extremely lucky in that regard too. Her mother is the antithesis of the stereotyped mother-in-law, and a wonderful woman too. While the power was out and while listening to her recount her stories of some of the winters they braved during the bad years in China, I felt, yet again, that my idea of what hardship might be is sheer silliness compared to what they went through. Yup, I'm one lucky duck. |

Golden pig. You? Also where are the pics of that Gitane TDF?!? |
Don't forget us Viets :)
I'm actually genetically 50% Chinese, 50% Vietnamese (give or take some White blood in me from colonization, but let's forget about that one...), but culturally Vietnamese. |
