Wish I could help, but this is the only VW 2-door "station wagon" that excites me.

these things are cool-
need to find a later one and swap to a 5 speed, then the big, big job is to swap for a 1.9 turbo diesel.
as the car is only 2000 pounds one can expect 50mpg on the highway with a diesel setup.
a long and complicated swap.

If I went and looked at that I would likely want to keep it for myself.

that car is only a starting point...

a blank canvas
then comes the long slow conversion

1. convert to 5 speed-donor is a fox 90-93(wagons were only 87-89)
2. swap over the front clip from the 90-93, take the AC same time(cooler lights)
3. get the front and rear disc brakes off of a scirocco 16v
4. then comes to difficult one.- source a 3cyl 1.4tdi (europe sales only) and the slow adventure of getting the electronics to work
5. enjoy 50-60mpg on the highway!

they look bitc-hen done up!

All that work for a vehicle that will rust shortly after a fortnight. I had a 1980 Scirocco S that I used in LA for two years and within 2 Michigan winters, the body began to rust.

If I knew anything mechanical about cars like you do, I'd be on the lookout for a used Saab. My second car was a 3 year old 1973 99LE that was so ahead of its time. With Saab being out of business, a used 5 speed should be cheap and easy to find. 30 highway MPG and buttwarmers are standard equipment.

it will look better with 2 bikes on a bike rack on top!
my last USA car.....
1985 Volvo 240 turbo intercooled 4speed/OD tuned with 14psi of boost, lightened flyweel and a euro-camshaft,
the thing got 27mpg cruising at 80mph, and I could still sleep in the back.

Im hopeful Dallas will sell me his VW when I get back-even like the color!

It looks like the rear quarter panel is a different color on the original Fox posted.

I had three Saabs. Suffice it to say, I was a masochist. Actually, I still am. I now have a 2002 VW Passat wagon. It has been nearly endless and expensive trouble for me. That generation of V6 engine was notoriously unreliable. I had to replace mine, and the new one isn't working so well, either.

I understand the VW diesels are very durable and reliable, so I'm on the lookout for a good deal on a diesel Golf. No Jetta. We like hatchbacks.

I test drove a Fox wagon long ago. It was quick, because it was a lightweight car.

My wife had to have a SAAB. Godawful over-complicated pile. The money we dumped in that toad would have bought a nice used Camry that we'd still be driving. Blew a hose on the SAAB. When I went to the dealer to buy one, the looked down their noses at me and let me know "We don't sell parts to customers. SAAB are special cars that need trained technicians to service". I lost my temper and damned them, SAABs, and the people who bought them. We were in the showroom. They got me out of there fast and got me my hose. Chunk of rubber, two clamps, and a bleed valve. Not high tech.

The Foxes were some nice little cars. It broke my heart when VW decided to become a poor imitation of BMW. Loved the wagons. In Socal, it's very common to see 40-50 year old VWs as daily drivers.

I'd sooner cram a GTI motor in that little thing.
You want another 245? I'm getting ready to sell mine It's not a turbo.

Having owned many of those mentioned above, my favorite was an ancient VW Fastback with a suitcase engine purchased very used in 1979. It was air conditioned......by the venting through the floorboards after they rusted out. I'd love another of those or a Type 3 wagon. Forgot!, we also had a Type 3 sedan! I referred to it as the "cartoon" car.

How about a Subaru? I traded my Volvo XC for one and have had not one regret. Mine is the last of the good body style. It is second only to the Fastback.

I would love a Hearse, not a hearse but a Hearse.

Isn't that moto a bit big for the rider?

If your going to do all that work you should just start with a BMW 53something Wagon.

My 1988 240 DL wagon with Thule racks would have been a much better deal! Folks were offering more than asking price on that CL listing. The headliner was perfect.....

Patience.

thing is....
America has a hunger for automatics and motors that are bigger then they need.
then add in all that electric junk, power windows, seats, sunroof, mirrors, locks, power steering
and the worst yet is the automatic climate controls that blow up and cost fortunes to fix.

That is my wonderful husband's dream car. I just don't understand the Ghia love, but he does not share my love for the old Raleigh Dawn.
