NOS guilt.

I built up a set of wheels this weekend on a pair of NOS Shimano 600 6/7 speed Uniglide freehubs. I'm sorta having a bit of "morning after regret". Those hubs are hard to track down, much less NOS... and this bike will be ridden, not hung up on the wall.

Any tips on getting over the guilt of deflowering a virgin (part)?

ThermionicScott 02-18-13 10:48 AM

I would postpone the guilt until you use up all your UG cassettes. :thumb:

EnzoRWD 02-18-13 10:48 AM

I've had that in the past, but ultimately I want to ride bikes.

I smile more looking at a complete, rideable bike with very clean but not NOS parts than boxes of perfect, unused bits. I can be tough to put a greasy chain on a perfect, shiny, crankset.

I'm stocking up. Loosescrews.com still sells them. :thumb:

AND... I've got a 7 speed Hyperglide body that I can put on, if the supply ever dries up.

Just remember that riding them probably will make you happier than looking at them sit in a box. :thumb:

Just swap out the bodies and use a HG body and you can keep your UG flower fresh I have done about a dozen this year HG cassettes are readily available.

Bianchigirll 02-18-13 11:49 AM

I have a similar delemia. I have a NOS Regina America 1992 mini groupo, cranks, shifters and derailleurs, that I am loathe to install and use.

Given that freehub bodies don't wear out as fast as cassettes, I'll bet that won't be as big of a concern. Last I knew, loosescrews was selling whole 36h UG hubs for $25, and since I plan to convert the one I got to HG, the UG body will be anyone's for the price of shipping. :)

Heck, I may buy a couple more of these, since NOS 36h 7-speed hubs are much harder to come by.

gearbasher 02-18-13 11:59 AM

Easy to get over the guilt. Hunt down another pair of NOS hubs, keep them in the box and ride the crap out of the ones you used. That's what I do. But, who says I'm normal?

lostarchitect 02-18-13 11:59 AM

Just ride it. That's what it's meant for. Come on, man.

40 year old virgins just get laughed at, it will be much happier if you do the dirty deed.

I can relate. I put the NOS Spidel 105bis crankset on my Lejeune Pro over the weekend. But then it had sat for 7 years before I did so. I knew I could never sell it, so might as well use it. The grease provided was still usable. Also put on the NOS Mafac Competition gold calipers. Photos at 11.

On another note...I waited three years to ride the NOS NIB Lejeune Champ du Monde. Wish I had not waited. The wheelset is still unused. I ride it on other wheels. But that may change.

Ah, the good old days... when parts came with tools.

poprad 02-18-13 02:18 PM

I love installing and using NOS parts. I think of it as the ultimate C&V mech experience, as if I had just picked the stuff up at the LBS.

And hell, that's just an excuse to get back onto the 'bay and look for more. Lovely Spidel crankset BTW.

Some still do... anybody need a Brooks saddle wrench or three?

DIMcyclist 02-18-13 02:39 PM

I could better use the Brooks saddle. ;)

It's kind of the archeologist's dilemma, isn't it? On the one hand, you can't properly research the site without excavating it, but excavating it exposes the entombed artifacts & ruins to the processes of erosion.

frantik 02-18-13 02:44 PM

did u buy NOS because you couldn't find any other source? i assume you bought them to use them... i'd feel more guilty letting them collect dust

wrk101 02-18-13 02:44 PM

One NOS component will buy at least 2 or 3 lightly used of the same part (sometimes, a lot more). I prefer to move the NOS to others, to improve my bike budget.

I know! It's a stuggle not to load up on stuff that I might never need. ;)

Trust me, they're all junk... every one of them. Ship them to me and I will give them a proper burial.
