Dang, BG, that sucks alright. The important thing is, you weren't on it, & there was no "catastrophic" failure.

I'll drink to that. I'm very sorry about your bike. I'm very glad you were not hurt on it.

Very sorry to see the seat stay cap fracture. What caused it? Maybe it was that crash you had way back but you would think that you would have notices an alignment problem after the crash. It is interesting to see the gap that has formed between the two pieces after the fracture and with the wheel in place. It suggests that there may have been stresses present within the frame. I wonder if the rear spacing had been re-set at some stage and the dropouts were not re-parallelled? Does the gap close when you remove it from the trainer and take the rear wheel out?

I'm in the 're-braze' and repair it camp. I would get it's alignment checked out though.

So sorry to see one of your pride and joys damaged.

Best wishes, Gary.

Another plausible cause of cracking. The square edges if the deep "BIANCHI" cast into the seat stay caps could be a weak point that a crack could emanate from. It does appear to have cracked along the first "I" of "BIANCHI" which would be a thin cross section through the seat stay cap.

BG..a sad event..I have to ask..did you ever get the break fixed?

I have a bike I've ridden for 35+ years..a break like that would break my heart.

The heater did it.
Bummer, not the first Bianchi seat stay end I have seen do this.
Don't send it to Cyclart.
Unfortunate, but the cost to replace with a sistership is probably well below the cost to repair/paint.

Sure, I'll help keep a zombie thread going to say that the words "chainsaw" and "welder" should never, ever appear in the same sentence with "Rivendell."

It's a shame that this didn't happen on tour. Everyone knows that steel bikes are easy to repair when touring. When you get home though it is cheaper to throw it away and replace... Strange but true.

I was wondering about the pantographing. Stress left by a stamp could start up a crack that would collect moisture.

The pantographing likely isn't the issue. It's done during the manufacture of the cap, and very common. You can even see that the cap chose to break, not at the base of the "i" but neatly between it and the "a".

Failure of theses solid end caps isn't all that rare, and is the result of the entire assembly being too stiff, so all the strain of seat stay flex is taken up right at the end of the braze fill to the lug. It's analogous to tube failure right at a weld, and other failures at joints which become the fulcrums of flex members.

If you bought it new, some bikes have lifetime warranties on the frames. My brother had a Lemond that he bought new and the frame broke after about 20,000 miles of use and Trek replaced it with a brand new frame.
