If you have the bottom bracket out you can run your finger inside the DT and ST. If its SLX you'll be able to feel rifling in the tube. Mine has a 27.2 seatpost.

Post some pics.

Hello Sandy, welcome to the forum! Sounds like you found a nice frame. Guerciotti's have a reputation of being nice bikes. And yes, post some pics, and we'll tell you all we know.

Wow... should you win the auction, you won't have to pay for shipping at all- that frame is local to you!

SLX is probably one of the few tubing types that can be ID'd after the frame has been built. As mentioned, check for rifling in the seat tube. If the fork is built with SLX, there will be rifling in the steerer tube as well.

It is a 10spd drive frame so I think that makes it '86ish(?) to what '97 or so when they tanked?

This is not true. SL and SP bikes will have the riffled steer tube as well. You must check the tubes via the BB for true confirmation. I do not think there is any reason to suspect the bike is not SLX.

Good luck with the auction. The "G" is a very nice bike and as a bonus you could ride it for years and not see another one.

Thanks, ripped it from C.H. Long, the original Marlboro man.

Anyway, that's a mighty nice frame! With a frame like that I wouldn't worry about the tubing. It'll be good stuff, whatever it is. I'd say SLX is very likely. And like the others already stated, it can easily be verified.

thank you all so much I am glad for your input
I have a Guerciotti alan (aluminum frame) right now but my mechanic found a crack in the bottom of the headtube by the fork, so this will be perfect since everything will bolt right on except the seatpost which is a 25

10Spd Drive was the Company that had the US importing rights in the late '80s to sometime in the mid to late '90s. You can tell it is their frame by the little racer in brake bridge. It was likely painted in FLa, and maybe even a custome color too.

No; I don't think that's what she's saying. Ten Speed Drive Imports in Tallahassee, FL, was the U.S. importer of Guerciotti bicycles in the eighties.

Ten Speed Drive Guerciotti catalog on Kurt's "Headbadge" website.

FWIW, the paint on my TSD Battaglin is really nice and has held up extremely well.

At the time, fit and finish on Italian frames could be really bad. Rather than deal with frames that were already starting to rust when they were unpacked, TSDI had the frames shipped bare and did all the fit and finish work that American customers expected. And they did a very good job.

At any rate, the paint on the pictured bike appears original, which means that unless TSDI lied, the frame will be what the stickers say it is. And I've never come across anything to indicate that TSDI was dishonest about such things.

If I remember, only the SLX TSD frames post the 83/84 transition came with the full chrome fork and chromed FD braze-on.

Hello Soylent I tried emailing you because I did not want to post the question on the page but it said i do not have enough posts
I see you also own a guerciotti and hope you can help me out. I already have and have always only had a guerciotti (an alan ) the frame cracked.
I really really like this frame it is exactly my size I like the color scheme and use of chrome but what should I be willing to spend up to ?? or what my maximum should be. I do not mind paying a little more than it is worth !! but I am wondering what i should walk away at ???
I have only been looking for a frame for about a week and there one is, and I do not know right now if these frames are commonly available and in my size or if this is just a lucky chance break
I hope you do not mind
thanks sandy

I think it's better than 50-50% that the frame is exactly what it says it is...however: if you look really closely at that decal, you'll see it has the diagonal "violator" stripe that tells you it's a decal applied on a re-paint. So, it may not be SLX (depending on how honest the painter was and/or what decals he had on hand), but my bet would be that this is the mark of a legit re-paint and tells the truth.
Even if it turns out to be an SL frame, that's no great demerit...I doubt anybody could tell the difference between those tubing types in a blind test.
Hope you get a bargain, but I bet there will be a last minute flurry of bidding, so be prepared.

oh great so you think that this is a repaint and these are aftermarket decals (this was my worry in the first place) people just dont repaint a frame for no reason at all !!!was it crashed or abused so that would mean the seller is not being honest

the Columbus decal says "repaint" (in Italian) so that only tells you it was done by a shop (probably a pro) that cared enough to use that "proper' decal and didn't just throw "whatever" on the frame...I think it's a plus sign rather than a negative. Could be that the owner wanted a different color, or liked metal-flake, just as well as a cover-up for damage or severe rust.
You always take a risk buying long-distance based on photos, but (based only on those pix) I don't see any sign of a collision on that frame, nor of really bad rusting, and it clearly has pantographing on frame and fork that says it's a legit Guerciotti.
As with anything else: caveat emptor.
Still, if I wanted this frame (I don't) I wouldn't feel worried about bidding on it.

Sandy I would not worry about it, unworthy1 is only half right the other posters are correct ...this is actually a 10 speed import bike they REFINISHED the bikes in Florida and since they were not painted at the factory they just used the riverniciato decal <I have one on mine> now if you do a search for aftermarket SLX decals you will see that none have the stripe that unworthy1 mentions
