Saddle crisis, Brooks Flyer

I just received my Brooks Flyer. Upon closer inspection, there is no seat post clamp.

I'm so disappointed, but relieved that I checked before completely removing it from the packaging. Is there a Flyer model that comes with a clamp as all my other Brooks have? Please help me avoid future stupidity.

Back to the drawing board.

STS

PS. I already have a return authorization for it and the matching grips.

I have never bought a new saddle that came with a clamp. You will need to buy the clamp separately.

TiHabanero 02-26-13 03:01 PM

You are returning a saddle because it has no clamp with it? Pedal down to the LBS and buy one for 5 bucks.

fender1 02-26-13 03:04 PM

No Brooks Saddle comes with a clamp.

Yo Spiff 02-26-13 03:09 PM

I have 5 Brooks saddles, 3 of them purchased new and none of them came with a clamp. The clamp should be integrated with the seatpost on all but the cheapest bikes.

My B18 Ladies and another Brooks sprung saddle came with clamps. This Flyer does not have the same sort of double rail that would accept the clamp I already have. It is the same clamp found on all the other 5 Brooks, new or old, that I now own.

The Flyer item page did not include any clamp option in the "other items you may want to purchase" area, even thought the tensioner is suggested. The tensioner is included with the saddle and does not require an additional purchase.

My saddle didn't arrive with a bike attached. I sent it back.

slowtostart 02-26-13 03:14 PM

Gentleman, my other new Brooks saddles came with clamps. My confusion arises from this discovery. No need to be so harsh.

This one came with a clamp. I'll find a picture of the other newly purchased one that also came with a clamp.

The Brooks B66 S also came with a clamp.

Granted, this is only my third new Brooks purchase. The other two did come with clamps, therefore I foolishly expected this would also.

I understand the confusion now. The one you linked to is a double rail saddle. It probably came with one because that is (these days) a non-standard design which is not found in most shops.

I bought a used Flyer from someone just the other day and it is a standard single rail design, which fits just fine on the bike I intended it for.

cyclotoine 02-26-13 03:28 PM

This is the different. double vs. single rail. No brooks single rail saddle comes with a clamp.

photogravity 02-26-13 03:30 PM

I have bought a lot of Brooks saddles and some come with the clamp and some don't. As best I can recall, only the double-rail saddles I've bought included the clamp, but the single rail saddles didn't.

I'm with STS about the harsh, sarcastic tone being unnecessary. For a minute there, I thought this was the 41. Sheesh!

ColonelJLloyd 02-26-13 03:31 PM

I've probably purchased well over a dozen brand new Brooks saddles over the last 2-3 years. The only saddles that came with a clamp were a B72 and the B18 I bought for my mother. Those come with a clamp because they're double railed saddles. The Flyer is a single rail saddle and it is expected that you will install it on seatpost with an integrated clamp; the kind that have been the industry standard for decades.

There should be no Flyer that comes with a clamp as all Flyers are "single rail" saddles. It's up to you to purchase a single rail clamp for a straight seatpost; don't be sore about it.

Thanks for understanding my confusion. Since this, too, was a very traditional and vintage style saddle, I expected a clamp.

But it's a new production saddle and it would make sense that it is made to fit 99.5% of the seatposts one would find today. I think it's silly to expect them to include a clamp that 99% of buyers wouldn't need.

rootboy 02-26-13 03:40 PM

If you need a clamp to go on top of a bare tube seat post, about 6 bucks at the LBS.

...and it's called sarcasm, grow a pair of sense of humors already lol

auchencrow 02-26-13 03:48 PM

The seat clamp comes with the B18 according to Brooks, on their website.

(Go to STS's link, and search "clamp" and you'll see their reply to one Emily Dooley.)

A saddle without a clamp is a crisis, isn't it? For your future reference, it's in the bicycle saddle installation manual on page 22. :P

Admittedly, even after all these years, I still lack a pair of sense of humors. :twitchy:

Hear hear! I'll take it if I have to, as I haven't had one in a while. I think, however, we should all have a group hug instead.

I wanna know...who is this EMILY DOOLEY?

KonAaron Snake 02-26-13 04:01 PM

I second the call for a Photogravity pile on...mostly because I'm jealous of his rakish good looks and his tandem.

rootboy 02-26-13 04:01 PM

Don't send it back, Slowtostart. Get yourself a nice seat post to go with it.

His looks are raked? Or ...bent?
