One of our cats, Mazipan, loves an open drawer. Cats are supposed to sleep 12-16 hrs/day. This one is closer to 20.

I've just been reading back in the posts and noticed some concern from 'catsters' over the carnivorous predations of their pets. This got me remembering:

Back in the days my mother cared for migrating birds — feeding and making safe places to rest and so on. Our family feline hunter was always on the look-out for wild meal, so Ma hung a bell on him.

One day, a storm came in; a flock of big white and grey gulls came inland and hunkered down on the vast lawn out the back. "Willie" (his name) was doing the lion sneak approach in the hope of a great victory — his eyes being bigger than his stomach. Our whole family had a good view of his progress through our large kitchen window. He inched forward and was defeating the bell. He'd learned to move in such a way as to prevent it from rattling around!!! We were astonished.

Willie got to the place for his final dash for his chosen victim and sprang forward only to come to screeching halt in cartoon fashion. The gull had got wise and opened out what looked like a three foot wing-span and was clacking his yellow and red beak. Willie did a 180 and came back to the house at warp speed with eyes in shock and as big as saucers.

After that, Ma would occasionally change bells on him so he'd not be so inaudible. I don't think he ever again relished a gull anyway.

Cats are fantastic for controlling vermin that invade your house, but if you want to conserve wild-life around your property, a bell and changing them once in a while works IMHO.

(BTW — I love cats, but circumstance prevents us from having one.)

At least that's what I tell our cats.

Right before I attack their tummys.

We've had three cats for a long time. Sadly, two of them reached the end of their technical lifespans recently, and even though they were never great friends, the remaining fourteen-year old Lou didn't look too happy about it.

So we got Fritz, a Siamese-Abyssinian bastard, pictured here in his natural habitat: with mouse and bikes :

Lou liked the company, but got very tired of Fritz jumping him every thirty seconds. Our solution: get another playmate for Fritz, to get him off Lou's back. In came Felix, a cross between a Siamese and a Birman. Lou and Fritz checking out the new arrival:

Felix is a very relaxed specimen, and it took him less than a day to feel perfectly at home:

When I got home tonight the three of them decided it was a good opportunity for some nail scratching on the door mat:

Life is back to normal.

This is AJ. He is a rescue kitty who lives with my friend Jim in Vienna. He was found in a Singapore alley all dirty, hurt, sick and starving. With some vet care and lots of love he turned out just fine...

Jim has to travel a good deal and AJ always knows when he is getting ready for a trip because the suitcase comes out of the closet. AJ comes over and gives Jim a good strong bite on the ankle to let him know what he thinks of this travel stuff!

Here's me with my wife's cat Mozart, taken (I think) last fall.

Every time I go to stretch out on the sofa, Mozart has to come up and lay on my chest. I think in this photo, I nodded off to sleep and so did Mozart, so my wife felt compelled to take a photo of us...

Felix (l) and Fritz (r) enjoying their first Olympics. They prefer ball games, beach volleyball and hockey being their favorites. My only gripe being that they were obviously rooting for the Belgians.

Judging by the 1981 HP Voyager I'd say Mango is right.

It's actually a 25th anniversary edition, presented to my wife when she left H-P in 2006. She's the smart one, I'm cheap labor.
