It may be 'for the best', but it still sucks. I am sorry your friend is gone.

We should all go so peacefully.
Dead pet stories always make me choke up. I've got a shelf of engraved cedar boxes near the mantle.
Ace... lots of life in him at only 2 years old.

Sorry you lost your long-time pal. I know some are especially hard to lose.
We lost a once-in-a-lifetime cat recently. My wife adopted her when she was teaching in Greece, and brought her back to the states. We always referred to her as "a dog in a cat wrapper." When I'd go outside, she followed me around like a dog, happy to hang out when I was working on something in the garden or on the house. She'd follow me up the ladder for the roof repairs, and offer commentary on the quality of the work from the peak of the roof. An irreplaceable companion in the bike shop. She'd never leave you hanging...no matter who said "Hi ya, Ellie" or "Think that front mech will shift a triple?" ... she'd never fail to respond with a "mrrrurph" or a more extended opinion.
I still miss her everyday and working in the shop isn't the same. Left a big hole. Ellie was the best.

Some sad news lately. On the other hand I have been down with a sickness for a couple days, which has led to quality lap time with Mango and Pumpkin:

About four years ago, I woke up one morning with severe nasal congestion and snot pouring out. Then hell began. I've lived with it all this time, trying every kind of nasal spray and allergy medicine under the sun, losing sleep because I wake up with my nasal passages swelled shut, I've even had to keep a bottle of nasal spray in my jersey pocket on my rides. If I go anywhere longer than an hour or two I take something with me because I know my sinuses will clog up. About a year ago I started using nasacort allergy spray and that really helped but I've still been dealing with it. I always wondered if I suddenly got allergic to cats (I have tricare but I hate doctors and haven't seen one since I retired six years ago).
After Miss Kitty sadly died last week I totally cleaned my place, shampooed the carpets, washed everything and bought a very nice air purifier. I read it takes awhile for all the cat dander to go away. But this morning I woke up and for the first time in four years my sinuses were totally clear and I didn't even have to blow my nose. Went on a ride and I'm still good. Haven't sprayed one single thing in my nose which I usually would have to do every couple of hours. I guess I just got allergic to cats.

And they sometimes have hidden musical talent you would not suspect. Here's my family's dearly departed lapwarmer Skidder, performing on theremin a few years back:
