help me pick a new crank for my vintage olmo

So I'm building up an olmo with brifters and new components. I need to buy the italian bottom bracket and I want a compact double if possible. I don't want to spend hundreds and I have a set of newish tiagra derailleurs and Brifters so I'm going to go shimano on it. Looking at the compacts in the 100 dollar range I see mostly ones rated for 8 speed, I have 9 speed shifters and a 9 speed cassette. Will the 8 speed crank work ok with a 9 speed cassette? Too much swing of Chainline? Any ideas for me what to try that's affordable. Thanks for your help. Al.
