has anybody ever posted a bike on CL to gage the value??

I recently posted my trek 412, with no intent to sell, but to see how much interest it garners, i think the bike is worth around 350 - 400 but i put it at 500 to see if I could command that much.. i have had really good luck with my market as far as selling bikes go, and i though this would be a good experiment to judge value... is this wrong to dupe the public ??

i should say "gauge" doh...

What would be the point of even doing this if you have no intention to sell?
FWIW ~$300 sounds right if it has newer tires and doesn't need a tune up. If it needs tires & a tune up ~$200 is a fair asking price.

Unless we are talking a nice Trek 700 series with Campagnolo or a nice complete 720 $500 is way too high to ask.

And IMO if you're not being up front in your ad and presenting it as "for sale", yes you're wasting the time of folks who are actually looking for a bike. At a $500 asking price though, I wouldn't even feel comfortable offering what I think it's worth for fear of offending you...

I have used feebay for market values before. Most listings are free these days but it might cost you a couple of bucks to run an auction or two with a super high reserve to see what the market bears that week. It really changes week to week though and really depends on if the right people see what you listed.

It is worth what someone will pay for it. You aren't selling hundreds of these...you have one bike and you need one buyer. If that buyer likes it enough at $500 then it's sold. If no one does, the price is too high for everyone.

+1 yes, it's a waste of everyone's time, and bandwidth.

Anyway, I doubt you'll get many hits at 500, and if you get any, it will likely be from people who hope to talk you down to 300.

I think it's inconsiderate of people's time, frankly. There is a C&V valuation forum and closed ebay ads that serve the purpose well.

Reverse tire kicking almost makes me as mad as the "Make me an offer" listings.

Ok I've thought about this for a minute and I've decided that's a pretty DB thing to do.

At the heart of the matter, it's a deception.

In my area, on CL it seems like there's several "flippers", posting bikes at fairly high prices. I've responded to a couple of wanted ads, and the first thing they ask is "how much?". They are looking for a yard-sale or I-don't-know-what-I-have -just-get-it-out-or-here price. In that light, so what if you post it at a high price. That's capitalism! And who knows, you may just get a suck... I mean, customer!

I listed my '78 raleigh pro on CL yesterday, for the price I would sell it for. No emails at all. Apparently I listed it too high for my local market, but I don't mind if it doesn't sell.
