SR Apex crank - what taper?
I recently bought a set of SR Apex crank arms, sans chainrings. The arms have 86BCD, 170mm length. The left arm is stamped "81" (I assume that means 1981). Both arms have the old JIS logo (like the first one on this Wikipedia page).
I've been hunting around for a JIS taper bottom bracket (maybe just a spindle to fit my Campy cups). Then I read on Velobase: To confuse issues SR Decided to make these cranks compatible to Shimano Dura Ace or Campy, with differing Crank Tapers to match and possibly differing BCD measurements. To further confuse things, the model type was not stamped on the crank arms - so compatibility will be a matter of trial and error. To quote that great sage, Penfold, "Oh crumbs..."
Any idea what I should be looking for? If it's stamped "JIS" does that imply that the crank taper will be JIS, or is there a possibility that it might still be ISO?
Just this morning I scored a NOS 32T Stronglight chainring. I've yet to find something in the 46T-50T range that wasn't priced like one of the crown jewels. If someone has something suitable (used is okay, but good condition), I'm willing to talk $$ or trade.

I suppose you mean this one.
https://www.velobase.com/ViewComponen...115&AbsPos=161 I have this one too, but without the guard, and my chainrings are 52/40. It's in close to new condition, & I was thinking when I got it, that it resembles the Nuovo Record closely enough to use on a temporary basis, until I find a clean Campy.
Also, I definitely noticed that they're nice & light, too.
Oh, mine is marked 170, a squiggle in a circle (?), 77, F. EDIT: I guess the squiggle inside that circle is actually JIS, but it leans the wrong way to read it very easily.
2nd EDIT: I see now, that mine are the AX-5LA, which would be AX-5LA-SL (super light) if I just drilled some holes in the chainrings.
That's probably a bit above my "current" skill level though.

Mine has an 86BCD though, like a Stronglight 99. In my hunt for chainrings, I've encountered 86, 106, 118, and 144 BCD, all called SR Apex.

That definitely makes it tricky for you. I actually tried swapping to Shimano BCD before, just for fun, & it's a no-go, but these might very well fit Campagnolo's 144 BCD, like they say there.
