DANG IT!
That is some serious Eye candy amoungst all the other eye candy in this thread. Beautiful paint, incredible attention to detail. Which brand of brakes are those? And the bike? (I am not one of the guys here who can identify a bike with a swatch of paint. ;) ) The brakes are Universal 61 and the bike is a Motobecane LeChampion repainted many years ago by CyclArt. Brent |

MAFACs on my dear old Frejus. The rear one has a second bridge bolted across the pivot bolts to anchor the prosaic Pletscher rack without damaging the seat stays. It has no effect on braking, which is excellent. The Koolstops are wizard. http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=320343 More MAFACS, Racer on a 1970ish PX10 and "Dural Forge" on a 1962 Ephgrave which hang in my shop. Both have 4-dot MAFAC pads. Braking is good, but not like the Frejus. http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=320345 Universal 61 with original pads on a 1968 Cinelli SC. Braking is meh because the pads are old and hard. Haven't really scared myself yet. Until I do, the original pads stay. I have a lot of side-pull bikes, since Campy side pulls are so nice and the levers fit my hands and feel great. Also, side-pulls work better on track bikes since they don't require a housing stop on the head set. Then there's this thing which isn't one or the other: http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=320348 Greatest rim brake ever made. |

Great pictures. Great stuff, Michael. You can see that I paraphrased a conversation you and I had about sidepulls.

Thanks, Tom! |
I'm liking these with v-brake pads and I'd rather set up centerpulls than cantilevers any day.

Let me ask this, braking experts. My Gunnar Sport has medium range caliper brakes, Tektro 730 model. The brakes look nice but their stopping power leaves much to be desired. I have swapped the pads to Kool Stop salmons and that helped, but they are still not up to par with brakes on my other bikes (which have cantis or short reach calipers). Am I likely to see any improvement in braking power by installing some VO Gran Compe centerpulls or mid-reach brakes? How about Shimano Br-R600s? If money were no object, I would get some Paul Racers but a set of them would probably cost me $250 installed -- more than I want to spend.

Perfect for the mixte! These are actually Dia-Compe something-or-other, with aftermarket Yokozuna salmon pads (from Riv).

What brake levers are you using? Levers have as much to do with braking power as the calipers.

Lotsa love for Paul here, especially for 650b conversions...

No love from me, & don't ask again! :p ;) Just kidding, but they're low on my list of choices. It really matters if you have all the right parts like cable hangers/stops, in good condition, & I seem to have bad luck in that area. I got my Gran Compe side-pulls dialed in pretty durn good today though, so we can still live in peace & harmony. :D
