flickr

I have 4,000 photos or more on two accounts and I can't upload photos without issues. What a mess. I used to love flickr because it was simple to use and inspired me to try to take better photos. I guess they aren't planning to return to the original format and it's pretty unusable as it is now.

What are you doing?

gerv 06-02-13 02:46 PM

What about Google drive? Just load up your pictures as though it was another disk on your computer, then create links.

However, I'm currently using PhotoBucket.

eastcoaststeve 06-02-13 02:46 PM

Hey Frank,

Bummer aboutyour Flickr account...I always enjoy your pics.

I use Photobucket, and it's been pretty good, but they like to change up every once in a while too...call me old fashioned, but I
hate it when an "upgrade" makes a site I enjoy using less enjoyable.

BTW: got my FTW keyfob the other day...way cool, and a great conversation piece...thanks,

Steve

I bounce between photobucket and flickr. I've had the same problem recently with Flickr - don't know what they changed, but the upload feature is awful now.

ftwelder 06-02-13 03:02 PM

I saw Ipernity being mentioned and looked in. It looks like the old Flickr. It sort of blows because people complained about the old flickr and I always thought "SHHHHHHush" before they change it.

I hope those people like what they got. Ill hang around for a while and hope for improvement.

Thank you too Steve.

eschlwc 06-02-13 03:11 PM

i haven't uploaded anything to my flickr pro account in a couple months, but i've never had any issues doing so.

They changed it. Login, hit the upload button a give it a whirl. That is the smallest of the issues. When you log on the main page, try to scroll to the bottom. it just keeps jamming more images on the page. You have to "sneak up" on a page or link. It's very unstable.

I'm frustrated as well.

I currently have two accounts.

Both are Flickr Pro.

I am considering Smugmug, as that has been recommended to me by a friend.

Flickr is annoying to me at this point in many ways, especially since they left no "back door" option to the old version.

AZORCH 06-02-13 04:12 PM

I'll jump on the dog pile too. I intensely dislike what they've done to Flickr, but I'm hoping maybe I'll come around or get used to it or something. I also just loaded eight new images from today's ride and it seemed to take considerably longer than usual.

Italuminium 06-02-13 04:14 PM

New version isn't right at all. Fortunately I had no time for real camera work and just uploaded some iPhone shots, which works. Don't want to switch since any other service I checked looks even worse, plus k just renewed my subscription. Maybe emailing photo's to an account still works for uploading.

As a viewer, smugmug works pretty well and I like the black background, the old Flickr worked reasonably well. The latest version which seems to be pervasive now, takes much longer to load. And "hangs up" if I had infinite bandwidth is might work. Perviously, browsing thumbnails was very useful, now the images are bigger, but this comes at a big cost of time/performance.

Good to know about Smugmug.

Same here on other points.

Maybe there will be some relief from this Flickr Pro irritation if I take the time to learn the new features.

Might be faster just to jettison the accounts and move to Smugmug.

There will be a little more to pay annually, but perhaps that's the largest inconvenience.

I am giving it serious thought.

Why do these people feel that they have to mess with something that works? Boredom? Job security?
I'm still using Photo-B and have adapted to their new format,
but it's more difficult to use than it used to be.

+1 I also don't like what Flickr has done to the interface. I'm also having trouble loading, hanging, scrolling. And it's not easy to navigate anymore. They at least had the option to disable this photo fitting and retrieval 'feature'. It's annoying. Maybe we need to link this thread to their customer service address.

I just renewed my pro account before they switched too. GRRR!
I have too many photos on Flickr, hope they will 'fix' these upgrades.

As for uploading, I've been using their Flickr Uploadr app for Windows, since the old interface. It's a lot more stable than uploading via their webpage. It uploaded my latest pics fine to this new Flickr.

mparker326 06-02-13 06:41 PM

Deal with it. In a few weeks, you won't even remember what the old interface looked like.

Remember a few years back when bikeforums upgraded their website and no one liked it? Technology moves on and change is inevitable.

I have to make an addendum, smugmug has also changed when I searched it today. One thing it does though is load way faster than flickr, but they too were bitten by the big thumbnail desire. Bigger is the latest game it appears.

I guess I am weird. I like the newer version of flickr. Each page on my photostream holds a lot more pics, and no more white spaces.

Loading pictures is on the slow side for sure.

What makes it an "upgrade"? It is slower and more cumbersome to navigate. The heavy black borders kills photographs.
The flickr forums are going berzerk with complaints. They screwed up.

It seems to be harder to find a member's particular set of images though, I just tried to do that as a test. And the load time is way too long.

To anyone having trouble uploading to Flickr, take WNG's advice and use this app. I've been using it for a couple of years. It won't bring the old Flickr back, but it is infinitely easier to upload to Flickr. Even when it was the old version, I couldn't stand the uploader their website offered. I was worried it wouldn't jive with the new Flickr, but it is the one thing that has remained the same...thankfully.

Been using Picasa for a while now, but seems like Google is pushing Picasa more and more into their G+ thing, which is fine for when I'm sharing photos in G+, but when I want to just go to an album to find a photo to post on the forum or elsewhere, I want the standard Picasa layout. Haven't checked out flickr since their recent update, don't store much over there. Smugmug is good if you want it to be semi-independent for a photo portfolio or something, know a few friends who use it.

sauze 06-02-13 10:56 PM

I've never had trouble with imgur , it's quite simple / basic.

Drillium Dude 06-02-13 11:40 PM

I feel your pain, Frank. I loved Flickr's original guise - made things really simple, even though my bandwidth on DG sucks, I could still upload one pic at a time. I haven't tried uploading with the new version, but your comments have me concerned :(

And, yes - the new Photostream layout putting all the pics on the page - wow! Do they not know that some people in the world just don't have access to a hard-line with super-fast upload/download speed? It takes forever just to load the PS, not to mention navigating to my Sets and looking through them for the pic I want.

Change for the sake of change sucks - period. I guess some someones had to protect their jobs; I just wished they'd done a better job of it!

Another vote for despising the new flickr. I had to use it for my recent Retro Ronde post here, and it was crap to work with. crap.

Yet another solution to a problem no one had. flikcer was one of the few things in the cyber world I actually liked to use, and they ruined it.

Maybe it's time to go back to Kodak slide carousels.

mkeller234 06-03-13 12:47 AM

Count me among the disappointed too Frank! I'm finding everything just a bit more difficult. Fortunately I have an easy time uploading, iPhoto takes care of that from my computer. I don't use it enough to look elsewhere, but I do hope they fix a few things.
