What a boring way to spend $14,000.

Yes, but there is the convenience fee aspect which is clearly eluded to in the text. I think it is a reasonable offer and despite the joke about Budget Bike Center (that's what it's called right?).. this would actually be a good investment for someone like himself. I know the late 1970s onwards are probably worth less than $425 on their own.. but I think one day the patent and other early 70s models could certainly fetch north of $500 to the right buyer (overseas wealthy collector)... the 1% in north america just doesn't seem as interested as those overseas...

I have a lot of respect for Richard Sachs as a frame builder, but in regards to this: What's the point?
20+ NIB Nuovo Record derailleurs? This seems like it may have passed beyond collecting and into hoarding, and this is even coming from someone who has been known to veer towards the far side of this line.
I can understand having a collection of the different models of derailleurs, but he lost me here:

I can understand having a collection of the different models of derailleurs, but he lost me here:
All the Nuovo Record derailleurs are marked as shown. They include PATENT, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 11, and NO DATE.
...
I will also include the following duplicate Nuovo Record derailleurs NOT SHOWN in the Flickr set: 1972, 1973, 1973, 1979, 1984, and 11.
...
You can spend decades putting together a similar collection and matching the sequential dates of all the derailleurs shown.

My guess is that he didn't hoard them. More likely, he stocked up on them when that was the choice derailleur to install on bikes. Well, that explains the NR's, but not the other model. Hmm, maybe he did hoard them.

What this reminds me of is my great uncle, who was an evolutionary biologist and historian of science. He had, over the years, built up a complete collection of Darwin's On the Origin of Species. He had a copy of not just every edition, but every printing issued during Darwin's lifetime; and a somewhat less complete collection of later editions. To my great uncle, this was a necessary research collection since he was interested in subtle changes in wording that reflected developments in the author's thinking over the years.
It's a weak analogy, but it's the best I can do. Anyway, on analogy, I can see why someone like Richard Sachs would think he had a use for a complete collection of Nuovo Record derailleurs. Well, I can almost see it. It's easier to see why he'd want to sell it off, especially if he can get $14k out of the deal.

Not at pb*bikes you can't.
Dang. Did I just say that? Just kidding, if you're listening, Barry. (insert winking smiley face here)
It's an awfully steep price but, like he says, it would take forever to accumulate a similar collection. I'd like to have one. Maybe 2,
but 33 is for a person with a bigger Jones, and much deeper pockets, than I have.

Could a collection like this even be put together today? You see NOS in the box NRs once in a while but it would be very difficult to do today.

I can understand having one for each year there was another variation (aside from the date stamp). At one time I had most types of record front derailleur from about 1968-1974 of which there are almost a variation for each year. At the time I was looking for the right derailleur for my restoration and got carried away when some good opportunities arose. It lead me to post a thread about all the observed variations.. But I sold all the extras and just put the closest to being correct one on my bike and was done with it.

The bits are one thing but owning the Sachs collection is another. I hope it ripens for a while personally. It's too good to just "sell".
