Nishiki Backroads.. another score!
found this on CL yesterday for 50 bucks, here is the cl link http://rochester.craigslist.org/bik/3862167873.html
i had my bro facilitate for me and don't have any pics yet its set up as a commuter, im hoping to put some drops on it and turn it into touring/commuter, i have some fenders that will look nice on this one... should turn a nice little profit ill take some better pics once its in my posession.. any info would be helpful |
Based on the hash marks on the fork, I'm pretty sure this is a 1987 model. If so, it's an oversize CrMo main triangle (presumibly plain gauge, as there's no mention of butting) with hi-tensile stays and forks, SunTour Alpha 3000 derailleurs, Dia-Compe cantilevers, Sugino VP triple crankset and Weinmann aluminum rims laced to Joy Yu hubs (QR on front only). 5th in a 7 model ATB line. Original price probably $250-$300US, based on comparable models from the competition. Hopefully this will help to tide you over.

http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...umber-Database T-Mar, thanks again for all the work you do and help you've given! I'm the proud owner now of TWO Nishikis (Nishikii?) a Cresta, that you've identified as 1983 vintage, and now an early 90's Backroads, probably 92 or 93, as per the color and components, but I cannot for the life of me locate the serial # on this bike... Where am I not looking? To the OP, can't see the CL ad now, but, mine is teal with pink lettering for the logos... It's a nice ride, enjoy! |

However, I do happen to have the 1992 catalog and a 1993 product list and the Backroads for those years are totally different. The 1992 was Shimano 200GS equipped and available in white or yellow, while the 1993 version was Shimano Altus equipped, though the colors aren't mentioned. |
mine has all suntour, nice pair of thumbshifters too

I've got a Derby-era Backroads, if I recall correctly the serial number was on the bottom bracket shell. By the serial number mine was made in July of '91, it's Shimano 200GS and is hi-viz yellow with black and purple lettering. 4130 Chromoly frame and fork, no mention of butted tubing.

That's definitely a 1992, as the 1991 was spec'd differently and not available in that color, which Nishiki called Electric Yellow. Frame was spec'd as "CrMo main tubes" so it's they're almost certainly plain gauge and mated to hi-tensile stays. Did you post the s/n to the Nishiki Serial Nmber Database thread? If so, I've already got it, If not, please post. TIA.
