a girl i am dating (fairly new relationship) is at her parent's house for father's day. she is texting me photos of a full campy bob jackson and a chicago-built schwinn paramount with phil hubs. both are covered in dust and she says her dad hasn't ridden them for years, but he insists he still does. all i can do is say "well don't let him sell them without talking to me first."

arg, what a tease! anyone else have this experience?

of course, anyone on the flip side? in my 30's i don't have to deal with this, but when i'm older i don't know if i'll just let my daughter run off with one of my bikes for some boy she's dating, no matter how dusty, lol.

I held on to a Paramount much longer than I should have for sentimental reasons. I now ride more and enjoy my riding more since I converted to better fitting bikes with better gear ranges.

I would talk to the father. Tell him how much you care about vintage bikes. Tell him that you would like to make the bike road ready for him. It might take months, but you might win him over and end-up with the bikes.

I know of several folks who's bikes have my "first dibs" mark on them. I do it by peeing on the freewheel.

Or, since this is C&V and I'll harken the days or yore, make an honest women of her in exchange for an all bike dowry.

unfortunately, i think history dictates that i would have to give him 2 of MY bikes in exchange for his daughter, and maybe a sack of grain and a goat.

I think that history would equally dictate that he give you a Paramount for taking his daughter off his hands. He wants to see you two have a good start in life, right? Nothing says familial bonding like the gift of a Paramount. Even if it is a new relationship. A Paramount and a Bob Jackson also point to excellent taste and a fine family background. Marrying her (probably) won't help you get the bikes, my mother in law has a shed full of bikes (nothing spectacular but worth saving) and she won't let any of them go.

The one that really kills me is that in the same shed there are several motorcycles including a late 70s Ducati 860 that none of the wifes brothers could care less about but I (the only one with the skill and desire to fix it up) can't get that away from her either.

Sneak it out at night to your truck and trailer waiting down the street... by the time she notices, she probably won't care enough to file a police report. Either way you'll have an in on how she plans on following up and you might be able to get her to turn it over to the homeowner's insurance as a theft loss. You could fix it slowly and wait her out until she dies... then go collect the rest!

Why not offer to "rehab" both because of how much you appreciate vintage bikes. Bring them into top form. Renew the paint with wax and polish, clean all the components and shine the Campagnolo bits to a high luster, add new grease and lube, and clean the drive train to perfection. Then when you return them, politely ask if you can go for a ride together (arrive wearing your helmet and spandex and he won't be able to say no).
