180 miles on a centurion Dave Scott Ironman
My annual charity ride for the lung association was done on 'Ozzy' this year and left me with a few impressions:
1) Robbietunes and A.Winthrop are dead right. This is one fine ride! Just enough extra trail to keep it straight and let it descend like it's on rails while keeping it nimble and letting it climb like a goat.
2) Sun Tour Accushift/GPX does indeed work. In fact, it shifts like a bank vault closing, positive and LOUD. The 'clack/grind/CLUNK!' train of sound is forever embedded in my ears.
3) Index DT shifters are the bomb, all we ever needed, and a great conversation starter at rest stops.
4) After years of riding Ideale 42, 80 and 90 saddles I've found a bad one. The #39 is a butt hatchet.
My wife was kind enough to shoot a finish line pic:

Still learning
Looks just like the Ironman Expert I picked up a few weeks ago. I love mine too.
Congratulations on 180 miles!

Very impressive ride, and sweet bike! Is that an '86?
For a saddle, I have not tried anything yet that feels better then the 197? Avocet Touring II.

Oh man 180 miles on an Ideale 39 could be bad!
180 is a lot of miles on any saddle. I don't think I've ever done more than 155.

Ironman for an iron man!
That's a 1989 Expert, and you ran it OEM.
You da man!
Do I spy a BioPace crankset?
What tires are those? If you ran the Panaracer Technova 700x19's, I'm going to have to enshrine you in the teeth-shattering Hall of Fame.
Heck, I can't do 180 in three days.
Super job. Just super.

A feat worthy of two threads.
A year earlier, and GPX may have had us wondering if tricolor was worth it.
Great job on the Ironman.
An Army top takes advice from an old Recon Marine?
Geez, what's the world coming to? Next thing you know, people will own both cats and dogs.
A. Winthrop's advice probably made it easier to take the risk; he was an Army artilleryman.

Sun, what sun!?! Northern New England has been a flippin' rain forest for weeks!
Actually I was in Chicago over the weekend. I did hear the weather was nice.

Geezzz, I don't know how this thread got posted twice. If the Mods can fold them together, it would be a good thing.
And I don't want to give the wrong impression or claim credit for something I didn't do-it was 180 miles over THREE days, the annual Trek Across Maine.
In spades! I thing I'll swap for a 42 off another bike.
Not quite OEM, as you spotted the Biopace triple. I also had to kludge a Deore LX FD for the ride to match. I just can't get up the hills like I used to.....
Tires are Pasela 700x23s. I had bought 25s for this bike but the clearance under the rear brake bridge was too tight.
And 180 in three days is what the ride was.
Weather Friday looked iffy, but we beat the rain out of Bethel and Saturday and Sunday were perfect cycling weather.
One sour note: we lost a rider to a truck just outside of Rumford. First fatality in the 29 years of the event.

Oh, 180 miles over three days... well, that's different! Sounds like a lot of fun, really.
Except for the Ideale 39. On that, was the saddle too short, too narrow, or was it just bad leather? They are little saddles, but that doesn't seem to matter to some riders. I have recovered a few, and have several more in the cue. The frames are nicely made, but if the cantle is just too narrow, then what's the point?

The picture is the deal. Definitely 1000 words, meld of man and bike and accomplishment.
I'm still not sure I can handle 3x60. I'd probably do 1x60, then whimper out on day 2, try 30 on day 3 and go drink something.
Then again, I've signed up for the MS150 and the Cycle across NC this year, so I'll have to find some big boy pants.
With an Ironman crossing the U.S. under one rider (Kuotient), and going 3x60 in 3 days under another (top506), the legend is getting firmly entrenched. Folks may think it's hype. Fine. Ride the hype. Either that, or hype the riders; they are the real deal.

I'm shocked and dismayed that Marine Recon R'Tunes doesn't
know that GPX came only on the '89 Expert, not the '87, which
boasted Shimano 105. Must be getting old, that JarHead.
.
And I know JarHeads, Top. My 175mm gun battalion (Google "Guns
of the DMZ") was OpCon 3rd Marines in '68-'69, my B Battery
OpCon 1st Marines for part of the time.
.
Lovely bike, the IMan '89 and the GPX group too.
.
By the way, Top, you look so much like a Brit friend of mine,
now retired on the Isle of Skye, Scotland, that I almost
fell off my couch when I pulled up your wife's pic.
.
PS - Oops, I see there are TWO postings on this subject. In
the other one R'Tunes doesn't get the years mixed up. I guess
he's not getting old and feeble-minded like I thought. And,
anyway, who am I to talk. I'm pushing 69. :-(
