High end stem shifters?

What would be considered high end stem shifters? I've kind've got an idea for a counter culture C&V project. Input please.

schwinnderella 06-26-13 04:11 PM

Not sure there are any, my choice would be suntour power shifters.

spacemanz 06-26-13 04:12 PM

Gotta be Suntour Power shifters. Although, I haven't seen too many in the stem-mount flavor, that is what I use. :thumb:

sailorbenjamin 06-26-13 04:15 PM

Maybe get a stem mount bracket and put other shifters on it?

sailorbenjamin 06-26-13 04:16 PM

They make cool stuff for aero bars that might work.

High end stem shifters is an oxymoron.

If you are going for a chrome and bling look, it would be hard to beat Schwinn TwinStiks.

For quality and functionality, this. They're all over eBay for cheap. I have some on a shelf here.

I've seen these on several builds around here and they look pretty nice. http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/sh15.htm

However, bike co-ops and ebay are filled with cheaper solutions.

IMO they work well when stem height is considerable... with basically a more upright riding position.

I like the look of the Schwinn shifters better than most. Almost Raymond Loewy - worthy.
Will take some thinking to make work on a standard sized stem though.

With the ratchet mechanism. Far and away the best of the time.

Bikedued 06-26-13 05:33 PM

I had a bike once with Shimano 6 speed stem shifters. Only bike I had ever seen with them. A Maruishi IIRC?,,,,BD

Velognome 06-26-13 05:36 PM

Braze some bosses onto the stem and mount up a set of vintage Campy shifters.....don't forget your Dork Disc!

hcoble2000 06-26-13 05:49 PM

I seem to remember Schwinn had a touring model of the Paramount back in the 70's that had stem mounted shifters, don't remember the brand of the shifters but might be worth looking through some old Paramount brochures.

WNG 06-26-13 05:55 PM

Retro-friction stem shifters probably highest end you can have.
+1 on the Suntour Power Shifters.
Shimano also had a polished set of stem shifters with ball detents, very attractive finish. Don't recall the model #.

Hogwash!
I have seen a French stem with shift bosses , ask Wayne at Velo Classique about it, it was the coolest setup I have ever seen on stem shifting..

RaleighSport 06-26-13 06:15 PM

All excellent suggestions. I think I have the ST power shifters, and the Schwinn S ones actually and if I recall right some weird looking silvery shimano ones that I can't say I've seen suggested. I like the mod ideas you guys are throwing out too, and I especially like the draft tap handles shifter pic there

Fwiw, the Schwinn levers mount to the steerer tube, not the stem, between the upper headset race and the locknut. Should fit any bike and I've got a box of them if you want.
Beer levers are cooler though.

My '83 UO-9 had a setup like that. Alas, I was not a bright boy back then and tossed the stem and shifters both.

These are great: http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-SHIM...725#vi-content. If you remove the crappy plastic shifters, you can mount any nice Shimano DT shifter on there.

sailorbenjamin 06-26-13 08:57 PM

High end stem shifters? What other end would you mount them on?:roflmao2:

Man, wish I'd thought of that yesterday:D

Oooh, Dura-Ace stemmies would be kind of sweet. :saweeet:

That's what I'm sayin'. That would make a nice "10 speed". I grabbed 2 sets of those shifters on the cheap just for the mounts.
