New Centurion project - and a question
 

I recently began changing this Accordo from a roadie to something more fitting a city commuter. It had been my wife's bike and then my oldest son's. Neither of them are comfortable with road bars, so I am putting on mustache bars to make it more upright friendly. Tires were shot (originals from 1985), so I have a pair of Paselas on the way as well. I would like to add fenders. What fits and where do I find them. I think I will add a rack on the rear as well.

Try rei.com or velo-orange.com. From your photo, it looks like you've got enough space under the brake bridge.

I have a Centurion Comp TA and a Centurion Ironman Expert, those bikes you can barely fit 28mm tires under the brake bridge. But they're a different beast.

I never liked mustache bars; ymmv. I'd try out a pair of trekking bars like these, which are popular in Europe. Here is a comparison of different bar types you may find useful: http://sheldonbrown.com/deakins/handlebars.html

I have mustache bars on a Bridgestone XO-2 and have been using trekking bars on my primary rider for the past 5 years. The Trekking bars, from my experience, are much better. The only downside is they don't look as nice.

I just found that out, having put 28mm paselas on my Lemans RS. It just clears the rear brake, and when I ride, I get a rubbing at one part of the tire rotation. I'm guessing a small high spot on the tire, or the wheel is a hair out of true vertically?

The Accordo has 27" wheels, and I passed on trying 1 3/8 width, staying with the 1 1/4, just in case the wider tires caused fender issues.

^ If your getting tire rub in one spot you likely have a wheel out of true.

Any 700c fenders should work on there, you have a ton to choose from. Plastic fenders are super easy to mount, and cheaper than aluminum. I'm happy with the SKS chromoplastics that I've been running for a few years, they seem indestructible.

Have you considered North Road bars. You should be able to get these cheaper than moustache, and your wife might be more likely to find them pleasant.

Thanks acoffin. You answered the question I should have been asking; "will fenders for 700c fit the 27" wheeled bike?" That certainly opens up more options than I was seeing, looking for 27s.
