So, i picked up a Silk Road 500 on CL for $300. Pretty clean; clearly hasn't been ridden much. Bought as you see it. Thoughts?

it's a cool bike. road bike with front suspension. Headshock can be a pain in the a$$, but are well designed, they just require regular maintenance. They can be very difficult to take apart and put back together so be careful! Possibly have it service by your local cannondale dealer, but first make sure they have been a dealer for over 10 years and have an older mechanic so you know he has experience with it.

Pibber, The SR was designed with the P-R race in mind, Rock Shox designed a road suspension fork that I think was called Ruby in the same time frame. There was pretty good interest everywhere except in the market place for both. I think weight weenieitus, which was running rampant at the same time didn't help.
Do you have any build plans yet?

Yeah, i'm not worried about the weight of the bike, fortunately. I'm still working on my weight. But, i would like to go with some carbon, here and there, i guess. I'm going to go with a more updated set of bars as i like the width. My SR's bars are nice, but narrow. So many options!
Just remembered! Time to buy some "stickers" for the other black bike i've got.....
I'm gonna ride it like it's stolen!
