Scored a '88 Cannondale ST400 touring bike!

A few weeks ago I scored a nice old Cannondale at an estate sale. Knowing little about older Cannondales I didn't know what it was when I walked up on it but it looked to be my size.. I'd been on the lookout for a decent road or touring bike so I gave it a once over. First I noticed the DT shifters and the dual fender eyelets on the front & rear. Then the mid fork bosses. My excitement was quickly building. These are the exact features I've been searching for. Then the 27" wheels threw me off (Bummer). The wheels along with the threaded fork made me realize it was older than my initial impression. I started checking out the components next. Suntour Accushift front, rear, and shifters plus Diacomp brake calipers and non aero levers (Not too impressive.) I checked every inch of the frame for damage or signs of neglect/abuse. Tires were newer. Overall everything looked great. The seller said the owner bought it new and she didn't ride it much. I looked it over 3 or 4 times all the while my mind racing back and fourth about how I'd want to set it up and what that would entail. Meanwhile others are starting to notice it, and stand by hoping I look away so they could scoop it up from under me. All this time I hadn't noticed the price tag as it'd been flipped around so I couldn't see the price on the other side. I flipped it around and... "bicycle $125". I couldn't get to the checkout line fast enough.

About 3 days and $40 later I found a Diamondback Expert with 700c Ultegra/Open Pro Wheels, Ultegra 8spd bar end shifters, and dual pivot brakes. The seat post was seized REAL bad so it became the perfect donor. I only had one 700c tire so the front still has the original 27" wheel and tire for now.

You lucky dog! Enjoy the ride. Old C'dale frames are insanely durable.

Mr. Embry, The caliper braked STs are becoming pretty popular, primarily in the larger sizes and generally command a small premium over the SRs. Good find.

For gods sake be careful with those plastic top tube cable guides. They're next to impossible to find. Mine were solid when I installed new housing, I was super careful and didn't break any. One month later and two are broken just from the stiff housing putting pressure on them.

Great Score.. BTW, aren't those brake levers hood supposed to be aero? That is a late 80s Cannondale, isn't it?

It's an 88. I think these are the original. They look like the ones in the catalog.

I hope that doesn't happen. I hate using zip ties.

I'm surprised it took so long. It's a nice rider.

Yep, older Cannondales are the new "it" bikes around here.

It does seem that brands and models, even small parts/groups, come in bunches.

Mr. Embry, If you want info specifically about the early STs, ask rccardr, he's restored several.

+1 especially for touring.
I have two identical bikes here, sport-touring framesets, and the 27" is just as nice as the 700c conversion, and less trouble to build.

BTW, a local rider here is selling his ST400 frame/fork/headset w/triple Sugino crankset, DC calipers....$140 I think.

Nothing. Just more tire choices. And with the modern hub I have more drivetrain options.

I was shocked but I didn't even have to move the brake pads on the rear. The front is only going to take about 1mm to be good. At first I thought the tires had been mislabeled.

pibber, You have the SRd to finish. That written, it was fun to have the R1000T project while the SR500 was in limbo, was is the keyword in this sentence.

Shoo Goo works, too. You just have to let it set up overnight before you run the cable through it again.
