Austro Daimler Inter-10

Hello all,
I'm new to the group, and actually just getting back into cycling, my 14 yr old son is dragging me out... I've got him riding my Nishiki Prestige that I rode back in the eighties as a teenager, he loves it. About ten years ago, another attempt was made to get back into it, and I picked up my Austro Daimler Inter 10 on Ebay fairly cheap ($150 shipped to my door). From the research I've done, I can't find another with the components mine has. My bike is all Campagnolo, the deraulers, cranks, brakes, pedals, seat post, etc... Everything is Campy except the bars, they're Cinelli. Is it possible someone upgraded, or was this an option with this bike?
On another note, the bike's paint is a little rough, I was considering repainting, but then started pricing the decals, holy crap are they expensive. The Reynolds 531 tubing decals/AD decals are out of this world expensive. Would I be hurting the value of the bike by stripping and refinishing it?
Any and all input is valued and appreciated.
Thanks,
Brian

Pics would help to get a full assessment of your bike. What you might consider as a trashed finish and graphics might be acceptable "patina" to most, and maybe best off not being messed with. What would really be a killer is major rust anywhere on the frame....but we can't tell what's going on till we see pics. Get a good shot of the drive side of the bike, then all the lugs, BB shell, fork and fork crown. Give us an idea too what you might be thinking as being too expensive for new decals, as you might think of it more in consideration of what the bike and the components on it is currently valued at and the cost of new decals might not sound so bad if you do so.
Not sure, but IIRC, the Inter 10 might be more more towards the middle of their model lines back in the early 80's maybe?... Possibly below the Superleigcht and the Vent Noir.... AD experts here can confirm....
But many of their bikes sported Camapgnolo NR groups with the requisite Cinelli bars and stems., so your bike's specs, do not sound unusual. ADs are also usually found with high spec Shimano groups on them.

In the research I did, I found Shimano to be the most commonly found on the Inter 10 model, couldn't find any reference to the Campy stuff. I'll get pics and post as soon as I get a chance...

Yep, I think this was upgraded. I only owned one and it was full 531 with Shimano dropouts but a hodgepodge of components, including some titanium Huret stuff. No Campy that I can recall, but there may have been a bit or two.
Nice bikes, and worth the upgrade if the geometry (long top tube) suits you.

While taking some pictures I noticed something a little unusual, the quick release on the front is Campagnolo, while the rear is Suntour. I assume this means some things have been changed at some point in time. I just attempted to upload some pics, but all of the files are too large. What I have is roughly some scrapes all over the down tube/forks/chain stays/etc., and some decals that are barely still there. I found (and ordered) some decals (Campagnolo and Reynolds 531) at a reasonable price from the UK, which was $70 cheaper than what I found on ebay. After looking at some images on Google, I believe I'm going to refinish the bike. The reproductions of the Austro Daimler decals run $60 on ebay, and that's the only place I've been able to find them, any help I can get finding the AD decals would be great...

Brian_32 08-15-13 05:10 PM

Well, I stripped the components off the bike tonight, got everything ordered. I couldn't find Inter-10 decals, so I ordered the Vent Noir set, and probably will only use the Austro Daimler decals. I'll do my best to get some pics on here after I get her finished. Does anyone know the difference between the Vent Noir frame and the Inter 10 frame?

Chombi 08-15-13 05:14 PM

AD decals seem to be some of the most fragile in bikedom and I don't think AD ever clear coated over them like other manufacturers did.... It's even worse when they used them on their smoked chromed frames for the Vent Noirs, as they scratched off the frame even easier. So it's not unusual to find Vent Noirs with just little bits of decals left on them. If you do decide to refinish the bike, you might consider clear coating over the decals so they would last longer, but make sure the replacement decals you get are OK to clear coat over.
Not sure if all Vent Noirs were smoke chromed, but I would think that would be one of the big features that the Vent Noirs have over lower models like the Inter 10. I think Vent Noirs were always built with 531 tubesets, but it could be the lighter and higher competition "C" grade.

Here is my AD Inter-10...some of the decals still clinging...but flaked here and there.

It came to me with a Stronglight Crankset, Diacomp Brakes, a Huret FD, cyclone RD

Sweet bicycle, if mine looked like this, I wouldn't consider refinishing her. I did some smoothing on the frame tonight, got most of the down tube ready for prime, still have a lot of work on the forks and the rest of the bike...

Brian_32 08-15-13 07:30 PM

I've found pics online of Vent Noirs in various colors? Were they all the smoked chrome finish or did some come painted?

unworthy1 08-15-13 07:33 PM

some were a flat (or satin) black paint (in addition to the earlier smoked chrome).

This could give me some direction on which way to go with my Inter-10, a satin black may look sharp...

Wildwood 08-15-13 08:10 PM

My '81 Olympian originally equipped with Huret deraileurs.

RubberLegs 08-15-13 08:13 PM

My Inter-10 was a 77...I think...with Huret (rear replaced with Suntour)

puchfinnland 08-16-13 02:11 AM

someone has upgraded your bike, that is clear...be happy, they did a good job.

I repainted my AD/PUCH a different color but a PUCH color, everyone loves the result and I have no regrets of it not being original.

Correction: it was the earlier Vent Noir that had a flat (called matte) black paint, the later models called Vent Noir II (switchover maybe happened '78-'79) used the smoked chrome finish.
At least AFAIK.

BRAVO - Wonderful to see ya getting back on the road - Here's an example of some Bumper Sticker sized decals you can work with - The thread link #63 has some broken links but these .png plates should be of high enough resolution to work with - Posting these here in case you want to do an at home repaint with your young'un...

Decals ARE expensive, but it is 1: a lot of labor to build up a good PROPER graphic 2: Expensive Media they are printed on 3: EXPENSIVE printers they are printed on.....I do understand that end of it. I thought about doing them on my Torpado, but not even being SURE it is a Torpado, let alone what model....she is going "naked" at the moment! :-O

ironwood 08-17-13 12:32 PM

I bought an Inter-ten in 1978. I came with a Stronglight 49d crank, Huret derailleurs, GB stem and bar and seat post, Weinmann sidepull brakes and rims, and Normandy hubs. The main problem with the Inter-tens is that they made them with the same top tube length, either 57 or 58cm. This is okay for a taller frame, but it was too long for a shorter frame like mine, a 21" frame. I replaced the stem with a tall stem with a short reach.

I REALLY like this bike, so.... after the past few evenings (one very late one last night), I'm close to this. I have about six coats of satin black (over primer/sanded), replaced the gold tape on the bars with cloth black, and new black brake hoods). I'm looking into having my chain rings anodized, but that will probably come later. Going to put new tubes in (both flat), and get her put back in the road. I have the Reynolds 531 decals on the forks and seat tube. I couldn't find a "Made In Austria" decal, but I did find a small Austrian flag decal, so that's at the top of the seat tube. The "Campagnolo" oval decal is coming from England, and the Austro Daimler, Vent Noir decals are coming from Australia, so I'm still patiently waiting for those. I'll have to figure how to get some before/after pics on here, as I'm VERY happy with the new finish on the bike. I think cleaning everything to perfection is going to take longer than painting the bike did...lol
Many thanks to everyone's input, and helping me find the direction I went with my bike, can't wait to get her finished...
