Out of the jillions of Kool Stop brake pads ever made, I finally end up with my first pair ever a few weeks ago.....

Nope....my bad....but looked at your picture again and it really does look like there are "shark fin thingies" right at the hypen between L and S.

but to repeat... wrong on my part. screw does need to be at the back.

If you just spun the pads upside down then the screw would be in the wrong place - which would be bad. The problem is that you have the pads on the wrong sides - swap each over to the other brake arm, tyre-guides will be down, screw at the back.

Oh - and that is a directional tyre tread - the manufacturer will almost certainly want it installed one way around. Thing is - it will almost certainly not really matter.

I'll take another look at them and flip them if there is a little nub on the top (so it is on the bottom). I'll also look at the gatorskins as well (they are on another bike now). I usually go over the sidewall with a magnifying glass looking for directional arrows; maybe I didn't think of it on these...

as it happens I just put a set of gatorskins on and the rotation arrow was really hard to find/read..... black on black and small

^ You're right... I looked tonight, and very hard to find but there. Currently on correctly (front). Will check the rear tomorrow. 50% chance on getting them right without thinking about it I guess :)
